Geometry and theoretical physics by Joachim Debrus( Book )

3 editions published in 1991 in English and held by 230 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The interaction between geometry and theoretical physics has often been very fruitful. A highlight in this century was Einstein's creation of the theory of general relativity. Equally impressive was the recognition, starting from the work of Yang and Mills and culminating in the Weinberg-Salam theory of the electroweak interaction and quantum chromodynamics, that the fundamental interactions of elementary particles are governed by gauge fields, which in ma thematical terms are connections in principal fibre bundles. Theoretical physi cists became increasingly aware of the fact that the use of modern mathematical methods may be necessary in the treatment of problems of physical interest. Since some of these topics are covered at most summarily in the usual curricu lum, there is a need for extra-curricular efforts to provide an opportunity for learning these techniques and their physical applications. In this context we arranged a meeting at the Physikzentrum Bad Ronnef 12-16 February 1990 on the subject "Geometry and Theoretical Physics", in the series of physics schools organized by the German Physical Society. The participants were graduate students from German universities and research institutes. Since the meeting occurred only a short time after freedom of travel between East and West Germany became a reality, this was for many from the East the first opportunity to attend a scientific meeting in the West, and for many from the West the first chance to become personally acquainted with colleagues from the East

Nonlinear dynamics in solids by Deutsche Physikalische Gesellschaft( Book )

2 editions published in 1992 in English and held by 165 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This is the second volume in a sequence of books covering especially interesting and ambitious schools of the German Physical Society held at the Physics Center, Bad Honnef. It presents the current state of research on nonlinear dynamics in solids. Up to now, almost all experimental results on nonlinear dynamics of spatio-temporal phenomena come from hydrodynamic systems. These reviews focus on nonlinear dynamical phenomena in semiconductors, nonlinear optical systems, ferromagnetic systems, and spatially chaotic structures in solids. All are written at a level that makes them accessible to students with an undergraduate education in physics or mathematics

Nuclear structure of the zirconium region : proceedings of the international workshop, Bad Honnef, Fed. Rep. of Germany, April 24-28, 1988 by J Eberth( Book )

2 editions published in 1988 in English and held by 95 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Results important for the general understanding of nuclear structure have emerged from the study of the nuclei in the mass region around the neutron-deficient and neutron-rich Zirconium isotopes. This research report gives the proceedings of a workshop which brought together about 70 experts in the area. Review papers deal with the theoretical interpretation of the unusual properties of these medium-mass nuclei, using the mean field approach, a microscopic description, the interacting boson model and particle rotor calculations. Papers also discuss experimental procedures for studying nuclei far from stability and the possibility of complete spectroscopy. The reviews are supplemented by short contributions presenting very new results. Phenomena discussed include the interplay between subshell effects and the strong proton-neutron interaction in determining nuclear shape, the coexistence of different nuclear shape and the occurrence of fast beta decay
