Principles of optics : electromagnetic theory of propagation, interference and diffraction of light by Max Born( Book )

264 editions published between 1950 and 2016 in 5 languages and held by 4,621 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This classic text presents optics deductively as a system based on Maxwell's equations. It deals with those optical phenomena that can be described with the help of a continuous distribution of matter, and provides an overview of optics as a whole
Einstein's theory of relativity by Max Born( Book )

A Nobel Prize-winning physicist explains the historical background and scientific principles of Einstein's famous theory
Atomic physics by Max Born( Book )

215 editions published between 1935 and 1989 in 5 languages and held by 2,436 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The Nobel Laureate's brilliant exposition of the kinetic theory of gases, elementary particles, the nuclear atom, wave-corpuscles, atomic structure and spectral lines, electron spin and Pauli's principle, quantum statistics, molecular structure and nuclear physics. Over 40 appendices, a bibliography, numerous figures and graphs
The restless universe by Max Born( Book )

50 editions published between 1935 and 2013 in 3 languages and held by 1,507 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This highly readable introduction to modern physics was written by a giant of quantum mechanics. Gifted with a rare ability to explain complicated scientific concepts to lay readers, Nobel laureate Max Born presents a step-by-step guide to the understanding of molecules, atoms, subatomic particles, and nuclear physics. Starting with explanations of molecular motion and the kinetic theory of gases, Born advances to the laws of chance, conduction of heat, molecular weight, relativity, mass and energy, electronic charges, gaseous ions, light waves, light quanta, and spectral lines of gases. Subsequent topics include electron waves, Bohr's theory of the hydrogen atom, wave mechanics, Pauli's exclusion principle, cosmic rays, nuclear structure, and dozens of related subjects. Profusely illustrated with helpful figures and drawings, the text includes an extensive appendix that explains the historical and social significance of developments in modern physics

THE idea of collecting these essays occurred to me when, in the leisure of retire ment, I scanned some of my own books and found that two of the more widely read show a startling change of attitude to some of the fundamental concepts of science. These are Einstein's Theory of Relativity of 1921 and the American edition of The Restless Universe of 1951. I have taken the introduction of as the former the first item of this collection, the postscript to the latter as its last. These books agree in the relativistic concept of space and time, but differ in many other funda mental notions. In 1921 I believed-and I shared this belief with most of my contemporary physicists-that science produced an objective knowledge of the world, which is governed by deterministic laws. The scientific method seemed to me superior to other, more subjective ways of forming a picture of the world philosophy, poetry, and religion; and I even thought the unambiguous language of science to be a step towards a better understanding between human beings. In 1951 I believed in none of these things. The border between object and subject had been blurred, deterministic laws had been replaced by statistical ones, and although physicists understood one another well enough across all national frontiers they had contributed nothing to a better understanding of nations, but had helped in inventing and applying the most horrible weapons of destruction

"Albert Einstein and Max Born were giants of physics and great friends. Their letters span forty years and two world wars. In them they argue about quantum theory, agree about Beethoven's heavenly violin and piano duets (which they played together when they met) and chat about their families. Equally important, the men commiserate over the tragic plight of European Jewry and discuss what part they should play in the tumultuous politics of the time." "First published by Macmillan in 1971, The Born-Einstein Letters is fascinating historically. As the world celebrates the centenary of relativity theory, it is also highly topical: scientists continue to struggle with quantum physics, their role in wartime and the public's misunderstanding."--BOOK JACKET
