Readings in applied transformational grammar by Mark Lester( Book )

31 editions published between 1970 and 1973 in English and Undetermined and held by 979 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This volume contains nineteen essays, dealing with various aspects of transformational grammar, by scholars such as Noam Chomsky, Eric H. Lenneberg, and Leon Jakobovits. These essays have been reprinted from sources such as "College English" and "Language Learning" and are intended for the most part for a nontechnical audience. The anthology is divided into two parts. Part I deals with problems in psycholinguistics, particularly in the area of language acquisition. Part ii, "The Application of Transformational Grammar to English Teaching," contains sections dealing with the use of transformational grammar in literature and stylistic analysis, in composition writing, in second language teaching and in teaching reading. With a few exceptions each essay is preceded by an introduction which attempts to paraphrase the main ideas and arguments of the essay. (Fwb)

After finishing this book, the reader should be equipped to do the following: read and understand the applications of transformational grammar that appear in the language arts journals; evaluate and teach the commercial grammar programs now available in a thorough and professional way; modify and supplement existing language programs with confidence; use quite different types of reference works on English grammar, such as Jespersen's Essentials of English Grammar and Quirk, Greenbaum, Leech and Svartvik's A Grammar of Contemporary English; and, most important of all, look at nearly any English sentence with a fair amount of insight about how it is put together. - Publisher
