Historical atlas of Christianity by Franklin H Littell( )

11 editions published between 2001 and 2003 in English and held by 522 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

How does one graphically portray "Lutheran" Sweden or "Catholic" Spain, where 98% of the population is claimed but only 3.6% and 15%, respectively, are actually practicing? How many Orthodox Christians are left in Russia and other states of the former USSR? How to reckon the number and life of Christians persecuted in China or Indonesia? Atlases are generally limited to sketching political hegemony, along ethnic and national lines. Indeed, the first 1500 years of Christianity can be largely conveyed by graphics that are primarily geographical. Yet as we approach the modern period, where the creedal preferences of rulers and governments are no longer determinative, and the bonds of the old ethnic religions have slackened, the geographical portrayal of religion becomes problematic. Franklin Littell's method in this Illustrated History of Christianity is best conveyed by the term "confrontation." He highlights those times and places of crisis and decision which the shape and direction of the Christian movement was determined. Particular attention is paid to the interaction of Christians and Jews and to the encounter of Christianity and Islam. -- Amazon

The Left wing of the Reformation gave western civilization a heritage which this author calls the Anabaptist-Mennonite tradition. In this volume, the author examines that Left wing of the Reformation to show that the ingredients of political as well as ecclesiastical self-government, the resistance to authoritarianism and totalitarianism, and also an un-coerced consensus of Christian faith and discipline, have in the modern world, emanated from the sects and churches of the Left (and not the Right) wing of the Reformation. Here, the author documents the significance of the early Free Churches of Europe for the emergence of the democratic idea in the West

Long night's journey into day : a revised retrospective on the Holocaust by Alice Eckardt( Book )

2 editions published in 1988 in English and held by 286 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Long Night's Journey Into Day is a stimulating and provocative attempt to deal with the impact and meaning of the Holocaust within contemporary Christian and Jewish thought. To Jews, the Holocaust is the most terrible happening in their history, but it must also be seen as a Christian event. The Eckardts call for a radical rethinking of the Christian faith in the light of the Holocaust, examining such issues as the relation between human and demonic culpability, the charge of God's guilt, and the reality of forgiveness. They clarify the theological meaning of the Holocaust and the responsibility that must be borne for it by the Christian Church, and discuss possible responses to it as exemplified in the writings of selected modern theologians and church councils. This enlarged and revised edition takes into account new topics and developments, including the issue of Austrian responsibility for the Holocaust, the significance and aftermath of Bitburg, and antisemitism in German feminism. More detailed attention is also given to other modern genocides and occasions of humanly-caused mass death. Additional literary, historical, and religious works are considered and appropriate quotations incorporated. The new edition also includes a revised preface, an updated bibliography and two new appendices
