Politics and change in developing countries: studies in the theory and practice of development by Colin Leys( Book )

27 editions published between 1969 and 2010 in English and Undetermined and held by 663 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Originally published in 1969, this work gathers together essays on Third World development by nine social scientists with diverse academic interests. These contributions are united by a relative uncertainty in relation to development, derived from the broader critical reappraisal of the area which was occurring at the time, together with a need to create fresh methodologies for the advancement of their respective fields. The text is edited with an introduction by political scientist Colin Leys. This is a consummately researched collection, ambitious in scope, that will be of value to anyone with an interest in political science and theories of development.--

The rise & fall of development theory by Colin Leys( Book )

22 editions published between 1977 and 2005 in English and held by 552 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book is a 'stock-taking' of development theory at the end of the twentieth century. It argues that the assumptions on which development theory has rested since the 1950s no longer hold. The ex-colonial 'third world' for which development theory was originally developed has fractured into increasingly diverse regions, while the end of the post-war regime of regulated international trade and capital movements has drastically curtailed the scope for state economic intervention. A much broader-based, more historical and more explicitly political theoretical effort is now called for

The end of parliamentary socialism : from New Left to New Labour by Leo Panitch( Book )

21 editions published between 1997 and 2001 in English and held by 392 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This trenchant account of the last twenty-five years of the British Labour Party argues that Tony Blair's modernising tendency was profoundly mistaken in asserting that the only alternative to traditional social democracy and narrow parliamentarianism was an acceptance of neo-liberalism. In blaming the Labour left rather than the social-democratic right for the party's years in the electoral wilderness, the modernisers rejected the creativity and energy which the party's New Left had mobilised, and without which their own professed aim of democratic renewal was unlikely to be realised. In this new edition, the authors, in collaboration with David Coates, review the debate in light of the Blair Government's first three years in office."--Jacket
Namibia's liberation struggle : the two-edged sword by Colin Leys( Book )

11 editions published between 1994 and 1995 in English and held by 378 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Not a history of the 23-year struggle by the South West African People's Organization to free Namibia from the rule of South Africa, but a study of how that struggle impacted the liberation movement itself and the political culture bequeathed to the country at independence. The main point is that democracy was severely suppressed in order to achieve the victory against such overwhelming force, and that the subsequent government, liberal rather than democratic, is ultimately answerable to the people, but not under their immediate control
Politics in Britain : from labourism to Thatcherism by Colin Leys( Book )

17 editions published between 1989 and 2015 in English and held by 337 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

NHS plc : the privatisation of our health care by Allyson Pollock( Book )

9 editions published between 2004 and 2005 in English and held by 261 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The speed and direction of the change is concealed by the rhetoric of 'modernisation', 'choice', 'diversity' and 'local ownership', and by the complexity of privatisation mechanisms such as PFI, PPPs, LIFT and foundation hospital trusts. Allyson Pollock demystifies these terms and the process of privatisation, providing an analysis of New Labour's 'mixed economy of health care'. Her conclusion is clear: a system which was designed to promote equity and universality is being replaced by a multitude of fragmented and competing providers driven by financial incentives rather than the health needs of the population."--Jacket

Critical political studies : debates and dialogues from the left by Abigail B Bakan( Book )

12 editions published between 2002 and 2014 in English and held by 199 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

A collective picture of modern capitalism suggests that economic prospects, political costs, and implications for human development and freedom under this system are grim indeed. However the possibility of an alternative viewpoint, and an alternative system, provide grounds for optimism. The authors in Critical Political Studies challenge the neo-liberal, pro-market ideology that has arisen in the age of the so-called "post-communist" new world order, wrestling with the implications of globalization, democratization, and the politics of radical social change
