The Muqaddimah; an introduction to history by Ibn Khaldūn( Book )

152 editions published between 1958 and 2015 in English and French and held by 2,373 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The Muqaddimah, often translated as "Introduction" or "Prolegomenon," is the most important Islamic history of the premodern world. Written by the great fourteenth-century Arab scholar Ibn Khaldun (d. 1406), this monumental work laid down the foundations of several fields of knowledge, including philosophy of history, sociology, ethnography, and economics. The first complete English translation, by the eminent Islamicist and interpreter of Arabic literature Franz Rosenthal, was published in three volumes in 1958 as part of the Bollingen Series and received immediate acclaim in America and abroad. A one-volume abridged version of Rosenthal's masterful translation was first published by Princeton University Press in 1969." "This new edition of the abridged version, with the addition of a key section of Rosenthal's own introduction to the three-volume edition, and with a new introduction by Bruce B. Lawrence, will reintroduce this seminal work to twenty-first-century students and scholars of Islam and of medieval and ancient history."--Jacket

The Muqaddimah, also known as the Muqaddimah of Ibn Khaldun or the Prolegomena, is a book written by the North African Arab historian Ibn Khaldun in 1377 which records an early view of universal history. Some modern thinkers view it as the first work dealing with the philosophy of history or the social sciences of sociology, demography, historiography or cultural history. and economics, The Muqaddimah also deals with Islamic theology, political theory and the natural sciences of biology and chemistry. Ibn Khaldun wrote the work in 1377 as the preface or first book of his planned world history, the Kitab al-Ibar (lit. Book of Advice), but already in his lifetime it became regarded as an independent work. -- Desription from http://en.wikipedia.org (Oct. 17, 2011)
Le livre des Exemples by Ibn Khaldūn( Book )

17 editions published between 2002 and 2013 in French and held by 175 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

[SDM]

63 editions published between 1879 and 2014 in 7 languages and held by 139 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Wolfhart Heinrichs, geb. 1941, ist James Richard Jewett Professor of Arabic an der Harvard University
