The lives of the twelve Caesars by Suetonius( Book )

928 editions published between 1470 and 2018 in 15 languages and held by 5,699 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Gaius Suetonius Tranquillus, commonly known as Suetonius (c. 69 ? after 122), was a Roman historian belonging to the equestrian order who wrote during the early Imperial era of the Roman Empire. His most important surviving work is a set of biographies of twelve successive Roman rulers, from Julius Caesar to Domitian, entitled De Vita Caesarum. He recorded the earliest accounts of Julius Caesar's epileptic seizures. Other works by Suetonius concern the daily life of Rome, politics, oratory, and the lives of famous writers, including poets, historians, and grammarians. A few of these books have partially survived, but many have been lost."--Wikipedia

Suetonius by Suetonius( Book )

106 editions published between 1913 and 2001 in 3 languages and held by 1,924 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The translation of the Lives of the Caesars is based upon the text of Maximilian Ihm, Leipzig, 1907 (editio minor, 1908) with some slight changes in punctuation, capitalization, and orthography, to conform more nearly with English and American usage. Where Ihm does not offer a readable text, conjectures have been admitted and mentioned in the footnotes, and in a few other cases a different reading from his has been adopted. The aim has been a translation, rather than the easier task of a paraphrase. The version of Philemon Holland (London, 1606) cannot be surpassed in style and spirit, and it is more accurate than any other English translation. An attempt has been made to compete with it in the only possible way, namely in greater fidelity to a better text than was available in his day, and in a nearer approach to the manner of Suetonius. The text and interpretation of Suetonius offer many difficulties, all of which have received careful consideration; but it is hardly to be hoped that the results have been satisfactory in all cases ... To the Lives of the Caesars have been added those extracts from the Lives of Illustrious Men which afford a continuous text and are generally regarded to be authentic." Preface
De grammaticis et rhetoribus by Suetonius( Book )

86 editions published between 1473 and 2010 in 7 languages and held by 814 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Suetonius' biographical sketches of the teachers of 'grammar' and rhetoric survive only in part and are fairly brief; yet it would be difficult to name another text of similar scope that is a more productive resource for the study of Roman cultural history in the classical period. For the early history of Roman education it is literally indispensable, and it is a precious repository as well for the history of Roman literary life more generally, for our understanding of Roman social and cultural relations, and even for the social history of freedmen and slaves. This new critical edition of Suetonius' rich and often curious text is accompanied by the first English translation to appear in eighty years. The commentary, the most thorough and detailed so far available, elucidates Suetonius' method of compilation and places the stories he tells in their social and historical context
Augustus by Suetonius( Book )

130 editions published between 1889 and 2014 in 8 languages and held by 813 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Suetonius' Life of Augustus is the most commonly read ancient account of the life of Rome's first emperor, presenting a mass of historical and biographical detail about both his public and personal lives. This volume provides the first large-scale commentary on Suetonius' work in English, drawing out what is unique about Suetonius' information, discussing how it relates to other ancient accounts, and assessing its historical reliability. The commentary is the first to be accessible to readers without any knowledge of Latin or Greek due to its use of English lemmata, while the new translation remains faithful to the original Latin. Accompanied by an introduction which investigates the career of Suetonius, the date of the Lives of the Caesars, the structure of the Life of Augustus, the various sources utilized by Suetonius, and the way in which the reader should approach this complex text, the commentary also looks to examine Suetonius' work not just as a repository of facts, but as a literary artefact carefully constructed by its author."_Contracub
Lives of the Caesars by Suetonius( Book )

12 editions published between 2000 and 2011 in English and held by 452 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Suetonius' graphic account of the death of Julius Caesar is only one of many extraordinary scenes in Lives of the Caesars, a series of twelve biographies of Roman emperors beginning with Julius Caesar and ending with Domitian. As a fund of fascinating often outrageous anecdotes, Suetonius' work is unrivalled: Caligula's plan to make his horse consul, Nero singing while Rome burns, tales of adultery, perversion, murder - every vice is exposed and recorded. Less celebrated but equally significant are the edifying descriptions of Augustus' splendid redevelopment of the city of Rome, and Titus' decision to put the state before his love for Berenice. Suetonius' accounts of the achievements and eccentricities of emperors, as well as being highly entertaining, give us valuable insights into the exercise of imperial power in ancient Rome." "This new translation sets the Lives in the literary and political contexts in which they were written."--Jacket

"The first-century emperor Claudius did not leave the fledgling Roman Empire as he had found it: his contribution was to turn its developing institutions into an imperial tradition. But the ancient sources represent him as an odd personality - active but manipulated by his inferiors, at once distracted and awkward and cruel. Suetonius' biography is a rich offering of both solid fact and the prejudicial anecdotes that his contemporaries and the generation that followed thought worth repeating, raw material for exploring the man and his reign. This commentary provides context for the text's abundant information, but form is not neglected, and attention is given to Suetonius' intelligent and conscious marshalling of his material, and guidance offered to students reading the biographer's often densely compressed style. This is the first English commentary on the Claudius Life to deal with both historical and stylistic issues."--BOOK JACKET

"Donna Hurley has done a sterling job in providing us with both an Introduction to Suetonius and a translation of The Caesars that we can confidently recommend to students. Her Introduction summarizes a complex topic succinctly and is informative without being overwhelming, set at an ideal level for the student and intelligent enthusiast. Her translation is accurate and contemporary. Her primary goal is faithfulness to the original, which she achieves, but at the same time she recognizes the need to make her text clear, entertaining, and comprehensible to the modern reader, and she strikes exa
