What is Christianity? by Adolf von Harnack( Book )

7 editions published between 1904 and 1986 in 3 languages and held by 930 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Harnack's work is considered by many experts in the field of theology to be unsurpassed. His approach is not meant to prove any set of dogmatic beliefs, as many Christian scholars set out to do, but is one of objectivity. His factual approach is not colored by the bias of trying to save souls or convert readers to the faith. He states early in the book that this is simply an historical approach to the question, What is Christianity? Subjects include The Leading Features of Jesus' Message, God the Father and the Infinite Value of the Human Soul, and large sections on The Gospel in Relation to Certain Problems, and The Gospel in History. He includes a fascinating study on how Roman Catholicism came into power during the 3rd to 6th centuries, and what facets or components of the Christian religion appeared during this time

It will be noticed that the earlier essays are predominantly theoretical or metaphysical, the later practical or ethical. Hence we have in these Essays Schopenhauer's views upon a number of important problems in Metaphysics and Ethics, valuable, as an introduction to his more abstract expositions, to the specialist in philosophy, and yet presented in such a manner as to appeal to the general reader and student of literature. -- From Special introduction (page v)

The art of literature by Arthur Schopenhauer( Book )

The great pessimist who believed in the best and expected the worst from writers here applies his caustic wit to literature and the literary scene. Schopenhauer's piercing analyses of style, critics, literary values, learning, and genius make this volume a handbook on writing ? illuminated by the author's own shining, powerful style. The best way to discover the finest qualities of style and to form a theory of writing, he advises, is not to follow a trendy mannerism, but to study the ways in which great authors executed their best work. Schopenhauer provides excellent examples for aspiring writers in this collection of essays from his celebrated work Parerga. Translated by T. Bailey Saunders
