Polarized light by William A Shurcliff( Book )

4 editions published in 1964 in English and held by 619 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Polarized light plays a vital role in physics today. This concise and readable study presents a wide variety of new and dramatic applications in clear, nonmathematical language. The contents include a description of the four principal types of polarizers and the use of retarders, along with an explanation of the great advances that have been made in dealing mathematically with polarized light. Eight methods of producing polarized light directly are indicated. Containing much new information from a rapidly expanding field, this book will be of interest to many practicing physicists, as well as to students and interested laymen."--Back cover

Powers of ten ... illustrates a picnic in Chicago and then begins moving ten times farther out every ten seconds, until our own galaxy is visible only as a speck of light. Then, we move inward into the hand of a sleeping picnicker with ten times more magnification every ten seconds. A rough sketch ... is an earlier version of the same concept illustrated in Powers of ten. 901, after 45 years of working examines the Office of Charles and Ray Eames as it is being dismantled and cleaned out
The world of high pressure by John W Stewart( Book )

6 editions published in 1967 in English and held by 333 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The techniques of high pressure research and its applications to different fields of physics are discussed in this volume. High pressure is a versatile tool for a wide variety of investigations of phenomena which depend upon variations of the inter-atomic spacing in matter. An understanding of it is especially important since it is the only available means for varying this spacing to an appreciable extent. Advanced mathematical techniques are not used."--Back cover

The conceptual foundations of quantum mechanics by Leonard Eisenbud( Book )

3 editions published between 1971 and 1972 in English and held by 12 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This monograph was written for the Conference on the New Instructional Materials in Physics, held at the University of Washington in summer, 1965. It is intended for use by college students at the Junior and Senior levels. There are nine chapters in this monograph. The failure of classical theory in dealing with elementary particles physics is discussed in chapter 1. Rutherford's experiment on the scattering of a particle and its consequences for theory are presented in chapter 2. Chapter 3 concerns electrons and protons while chapter 4 presents an analysis of electron diffraction. Heisenberg's principle of indeterminacy and its interpretations are the subjects of chapters 5 and 6. The author discusses the dynamical properties of microsystems in chapter 7. The principle of statistical determinism and the microphysical concept of state are presented in chapter 8. Chapter 9 summarizes the basic ideas of quantum mechanics. The monograph concludes with a list of general references for non-classical characteristics of microphysical phenomena. (Lc)
