Psychodrama by J. L Moreno( Book )

78 editions published between 1946 and 2006 in 4 languages and held by 492 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The growing interest in psychodrama, in its origins and applications, are the main reason for this publication. The papers and statements contained in the three volumes fall into six categories: (a) Papers previously printed in English; (b) Papers written in English but now out of print; (c) Papers which appeared in German, here translated for the first time; (d) Unpublished papers; (e) Psychodramatic protocols, and (f) Documents showing the development of psychodrama--from 1910 to 1945. In the last ten years I have directed over fifteen hundred psychodramatic sessions. My original plan of publishing the contents of a few hundred sessions alone would have required an encyclopedic enterprise of about fifty one-thousand-page volumes. It is my matured opinion that only the literary, word-to-act reduplication of actual sessions can give the reader an approximation to psychodramatic experience. Only the greatest variety of sessions can give him a comprehension of the diversity of human nature and of human society. But this ambitious plan came into conflict with the necessity to communicate my discoveries and methods without further chronic postponement. The result was this compromise. The presentation given to psychodrama in these three volumes falls far short of my own expectations, but I hope that readers, students and practitioners of psychodrama will find them useful, even in this unsatisfactory form. The growth of practice in psychodrama and group psychotherapy has been so rapid since the start of World War II that a careful evaluation of the theoretical and practical issues can no longer be postponed. Their use, even in their most diluted forms, is fraught with dangers in the hands of the uninformed and unskilled"--Preface. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2007 APA, all rights reserved)

J.L. Moreno wrote books, chapters and articles about psychodrama. His writing, like the method he pioneered, is rich and complex. Many students, practitioners and participants around the world have encountered Moreno's work in action; however, fewer people may have had the opportunity to read and think about the 'words of the father' due to the limited availability of key texts. A desire to ensure Moreno's work is available to the widest possible audience inspired members of the North West Psychodrama Association to work together to re-publish the books in this series. We hope by doing so J.L. Moreno's words will continue to reverberate across time and space: inspiring new generations of practitioners to be as creative and spontaneous as is possible whilst managing the complexity of modern day practice

Who shall survive? A new approach to the problem of human interrelations by J. L Moreno( Book )

19 editions published between 1934 and 1952 in English and held by 228 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In approaching the contents of this book, the reader must not expect to find society or social groups considered as if they consisted of the sum of the individuals composing them. Wherever two or more people are functioning as a social group that group not only consists of those individuals, but, more important perhaps, if that is possible, than the individuals themselves and without which their functioning as a social group cauld not be expressed, are the relations which maintain between them. It is these intangible, imponderable and invisible aspects of the situation which enable the mathematical sum of a certain number of individuals to function as a social group. Dr. Moreno's book might he described briefly as a study of these relations between individuals. Dr. Moreno develops a technique for a process of classification which is calculated, among other things, to bring individuals together who are capable of harmonious inter-personal relationships, and so creating a social group which can function at the maximum efficiency and with the minimum of disruptive tendencies and processes. "Group therapy has been accepted as an integral part of today's psychotherapeutic armamentarium. Unlike hypnosis or psychoanalysis, its flowering did not follow the usual slow evolution of many types of therapeutic endeavors. In terms of the history of psychiatry, the group therapy movement occupied very few years from the time when it first made its appearance until it spread throughout the clinical psychiatric field. In its development, group therapy was in a sense a mutation, a sport among genetic elements of psychiatric treatment. This figure of speech helps us to understand how group therapy suddenly emerged in the early 1930's and was accepted after only a brief period of resistance, compared to the long vicissitudes encountered by other psychologic treatment methods. If one excepts a few sporadic attempts at handling patients in a "class" through the lecture method or the smaller phylo-analytic groups of Trigant Burrow prior to 1930, one may point to Moreno's early experimental groups as the beginning of group therapy as we know it today. There seems little historical reason to doubt his pioneership"--Foreword. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2016 APA, all rights reserved)
