Minutes, 1863 May 27 - 1873 Aug. 2, of the company, preceded by land warrants, 1856-1857, of the Sweeney, Rittenhouse, Fant and Co. The minutes of the coal company also include a copy of the articles of incorporation, 1863 May 21, the articles of agreement, 1863 May 22, in which is described the purchase of the Ala. Coal Mining Co., and the capitalization of the newly formed company; and the bylaws, 1863 May 27. The minutes also contain copies of correspondence between William W. Waller and the Confederate government regarding the company supplying bituminous coal for the war effort. The primary correspondent was S.R. Mallory, Sec. of the Navy. In addition, the minutes include resolutions passed by the board of directors at their meetings, and by the stockholders at their meetings, 1863-1873; reports, including the 1864 June 1 report to the stockholders of president Thomas J. Parks regarding the contract to supply 100 tons of coal per day to the Confederate States, the financial condition of the company, and other matters; the 1864 July 21 report of general superintendent George M. Figh, some of which is on the use of slaves, and an inventory of equipment and supplies; and the 1864 July 21 profit and loss report of Benjamin B. Davis, treasurer and bookkeeper, all of which are quite detailed. Additionally, there is copied a deed between the company and the Central Mining and Manufacturing Co. of Ala., and a property valuation, 1867 Dec. 13.
