Evaluation of advanced lift concepts and potential fuel conservation for short-haul aircraft by H. S Sweet ( Book )
3 editions published between 1974 and 1975 in English and held by 24 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
The effect of different field lengths, cruise requirements, noise level, and engine cycle characteristics on minimizing fuel consumption and minimizing operating cost at high fuel prices were evaluated for some advanced short-haul aircraft. The conceptual aircraft were designed for 148 passengers using the upper surface-internally blown jet flap, the augmentor wing, and the mechanical flap lift systems. Advanced conceptual STOL engines were evaluated as well as a near-term turbofan and turboprop engine. Emphasis was given to designs meeting noise levels equivalent to 95-100 EPNdB at 152 m (500 ft) sideline

Study of load alleviation and mode suppression (LAMS) on the YF-12A airplane by Lester D Edinger ( Book )
2 editions published in 1972 in English and held by 16 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
The potentials and capability for implementing a LAMS (load alleviation and mode suppression) system on the YF-12A for the purpose of flight research were evaluated. The nature of the research is to minimize the design risk in application of LAMS to future aircraft. The results of the study show that the YF-12A would be a suitable test bed for continuing development of LAMS technology. This was demonstrated by defining five candidate LAMS systems and analytically evaluating them with regard to performance and mechanization. Each of the five systems used a different combination of force producers. A small canard vane or a mass-reaction device mounted near the cockpit was considered as a possible LAMS force producer, together with the existing inboard and outboard elevons. It was concluded that a combination of canard vane and outboard elevons would provide the most effective system for the YF-12A

Development and application of a photoelasto-plastic method to study stress distributions in vicinity of a simulated crack by A. R Hunter ( Book )
1 edition published in 1966 in English and held by 13 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
The photoelasto-plastic method utilizes the creep and 'frozen' stress characteristics exhibited by epoxy resins and other polymer materials when subjected to a thermal cycle whose maximum temperature is significantly less than the 'critical' temperature of the material. The resulting "frozen" stress-strain behavior is characterized by the generation of nonlinear effective stress-strain curves. Effective stress-strain curves of this nature were generated for two polymer materials, an epoxy and a polycarbonate for various thermal cycles in order to arrive at a material and associated thermal cycle which could be used to simulate the stress-strain behavior of an aluminum alloy. Also the associated birefringence was determined (calibration). Stress-strain similarity was established by use of the Ramberg-Osgood method of stress-strain representation. Upon selection of an appropriate model material and thermal cycle, elasto-plastic stress distributions were determined for infinite plates with centrally located holes to verify the usefulness of the method. This photoelasto-plastic method of stress analysis was then applied to study stress distributions in the vicinity of a simulated crack
Thin radiating shock layer about a blunt body by Y. S Chou ( Book )
1 edition published in 1970 in English and held by 11 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Boundary layer flow in thin shock layer about axisymmetric blunt bodies studied by Blasius type series expansion technique
Stagnation point analysis of coupled viscous-radiating flow with massive blowing by K. H Wilson ( Book )
1 edition published in 1970 in English and held by 11 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
This report presents an analysis of the fully coupled viscous, radiating flow at the stagnation point of an ablating blunt body at hyperbolic entry conditions. An exact numerical solution to the momentum equation has been developed which replaces the integral method employed in previous studies
