The Restoration theater from tennis court to playhouse ( Visual )
9 editions published between 1996 and 2006 in English and held by 428 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
During the Restoration, new playhouses were built to replace the many theaters destroyed by Cromwell in the English Civil War. The new theaters, built to stage the probing social comedies of the era, were shaped by changes in English drama, politics, and society. This film shows how the Parisian tennis court theaters, attended by the court in exile of Charles II, influenced the new London theaters, particularly Wren's Theatre Royal. Advanced computer graphics in this program illustrate important features of Restoration theaters. The influence of Wren on Georgian playhouses and modern theater design is also explored
The Renaissance stage the idea and image of antiquity by Richard C Beacham ( Visual )
11 editions published between 1986 and 2006 in English and held by 252 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
This program traces the earliest Renaissance attempts to stage classical drama through the application of medieval concepts of production, following the deductions made from Vitruvius' De Architectura and the impetus provided by the appearance of dramas in Italian, examining the building of the Teatro Olimpico in Vicenza and the theatres in Ferrara and Parma, showing the varying uses of perspective in scene painting and the development of moveable scenery, and explaining how, when the facade was eliminated and the door opened to reveal the scenery behind, the proscenium arch and the picture frame theatre were born
The design of modern theatre Adolphe Appia's innovations ( Visual )
7 editions published between 1992 and 2009 in English and held by 229 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Explores Appia's innovations: replacing the flat painted scenery and declamatory style of the 19th century with plastic environments for three-dimensional actors and actresses, using mobile lighting and counterpointing visuals with music. His designs for Isben and Shaw productions link 20th century theatre to the freedoms of ancient Greek drama and mark Appia as the father of modern theatrical design
