Alfred Stieglitz by Alfred Stieglitz( Book )

32 editions published between 1976 and 1997 in 3 languages and held by 1,587 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Stieglitz described himself as an American. His work began to attract attention in the late eighties, and he became a powerful, often domineering, influence on photography and art. His photographs of things and people-of sun and cloud shapes-become equivalents of a deeply critical yet affirmative inquiry into contemporary life
The family of man : the photographic exhibition by Edward Steichen( Book )

3 editions published in 1955 in English and held by 1,389 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Conceived as an exhibition for MoMA in New York in 1955, with a catalogue published both by Maco Magazine Corporation and Simon and Schuster, The Family of Man has been heavily criticized, usually for its sentimentality and its disingenuous simplicity. Although indeed sentimental, The Family of Man was not as simple as it looked. ... The de-politicization of the photography was in fact a calculated piece of political image-making, stating that American values were the only universal values, and that the world could be one big happy family under the beneficent guidance of Uncle Sam. ... One of the ironic aspects of the project is the way its whole aesthetic derives from those German and Soviet exhibitions and propaganda books of the 1930s. The sententious tone, the grim determinism, the tendentious ideological stance, even the design, place The Family of Man in the propagandist mode of modernism rather than in the utopian wing to which it nominally aspires. Nevertheless, and this is an important point, it contains many fine photographs."--The Photobook : A History Volume II / Martin Parr and Gerry Badger. London : Phaidon, 2004
Alfred Stieglitz : an American seer by Dorothy Norman( Book )

35 editions published between 1960 and 1996 in 4 languages and held by 1,365 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In this book [the author] draws upon her close association with Stieglitz and upon his own words to create a warm portrait of the focal figure of the modern art movement in America. The many direct quotations preserve in written form the bold, subtle nature of Stieglitz's speech and the brilliance of his parables and anecdotes. The 80 reproductions of Stieglitz's photographs constitute the largest selection ever published. Many are reproduced here for the first time. They powerfully attest to the purity of his vision. Ninety illustrations of a documentary nature, including additional Stieglitz photographs and work by artists he showed, are also reproduced--Jacket
Nehru, the first sixty years; presenting in his own words the development of the political thought of Jawaharlal Nehru and the background against which it evolved by Jawaharlal Nehru( Book )

9 editions published in 1965 in English and held by 1,080 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The primary purpose of these volumes is to show, through a careful selection of the most pertinent, memorable and interesting of Nehru's writings, the essential development of the political thought of this great statesman... Together with Gandhi, Nehru played the most vital part in India's long and tortuous struggle for freedom from British rule, so that this record of his beliefs and work up to 1950 is also to a large extent the record of how India won her independence." It includes such events as the Amritsar Massacre of 1919 and the martial law that followed; the repeated imprisonment following non-violent civil disobedience; and the growth of communal rivalries between Hindus and Muslims which resulted in the partition of India and Pakistan
