Nature's numbers : expanding the national economic accounts to include the environment by National Research Council Staff( )

18 editions published between 1900 and 1999 in English and held by 2,543 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"In order to really see the forest, what's the best way to count the trees? Understanding how the economy interacts with the environment has important implications for policy, regulatory, and business decisions. How should our national economic accounts recognize the increasing interest in and importance of the environment?" "Nature's Numbers responds to concerns about how the United States should make these measurements. This book recommends how to incorporate environmental and other non-market measures into the nation's income and product accounts."--Jacket
A new architecture for the U.S. national accounts by Dale W Jorgenson( )

13 editions published in 2006 in English and held by 2,001 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"A New Architecture for the U.S. National Accounts" brings together a distinguished group of contributors to initiate the development of a comprehensive and fully integrated set of United States national accounts. The purpose of the new architecture is not only to integrate the existing systems of accounts, but also to identify gaps and inconsistencies and expand and incorporate systems of nonmarket accounts with the core system. Since the United States economy accounts for almost thirty percent of the world economy, it is not surprising that accounting for this huge and diverse set of economic activities requires a decentralized statistical system. This volume outlines the major assignments among institutions that include the Bureau of Economic Analysis, the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the Department of Labor, the Census Bureau, and the Governors of the Federal Reserve System. An important part of the motivation for the new architecture is to integrate the different components and make them consistent. This volume is the first step toward achieving that goal
A question of balance : weighing the options on global warming policies by William D Nordhaus( )

17 editions published between 2008 and 2015 in English and held by 1,943 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"As scientific and observational evidence on global warming piles up every day, questions of economic policy in this critical environmental topic have taken center stage. But as author and prominent Yale economist William Nordhaus observes, the issues involved in understanding global warming and slowing its harmful effects are complex and cross disciplinary boundaries. For example, ecologists see global warming as a threat to ecosystems, utilities as a debit to their balance sheets, and farmers as a hazard to their livelihoods." "In this important work, William Nordhaus integrates the entire spectrum of economic and scientific research to weigh the costs of reducing emissions against the benefits of reducing the long-run damages from global warming. The book offers one of the most extensive dynamic analyses of greenhouse-gas emissions and climate change and provides the tools to evaluate alternative approaches to slowing global warming."--Jacket
The climate casino : risk, uncertainty, and economics for a warming world by William D Nordhaus( Book )

22 editions published between 2013 and 2015 in English and held by 1,903 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Climate change is profoundly altering our world in ways that pose major risks to human societies and natural systems. We have entered the climate casino and are rolling the global-warming dice, warns the author. But there is still time to turn around and walk back out of the casino, and in this book he explains how. Bringing together all the important issues surrounding the climate debate, he describes the science, economics, and politics involved, and the steps necessary to reduce the perils of global warming. He discusses the problem from start to finish: from the beginning, where warming originates in our personal energy use, to the end, where societies employ regulations or taxes or subsidies to slow the emissions of gases responsible for climate change. He offers a new analysis of why earlier policies, such as the Kyoto Protocol, failed to slow carbon dioxide emissions, how new approaches can succeed, and which policy tools will most effectively reduce emissions. In short, he clarifies a defining problem of our times and lays out the next critical steps for slowing the trajectory of global warming.--Publisher information
Warming the world : economic models of global warming by William D Nordhaus( )

20 editions published between 2000 and 2003 in English and held by 1,793 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book presents in detail a pair of models of the economics of climate change. The models, called RICE-99 (for the Regional Dynamic Integrated model of Climate and the Economy) and DICE-99 (for the Dynamic Integrated Model of Climate and the Economy) build on the authors' earlier work, particularly their RICE and DICE models of the early 1990s.Humanity is risking the health of the natural environment through a myriad of interventions, including the atmospheric emission of trace gases such as carbon dioxide, the use of ozone-depleting chemicals, the engineering of massive land-use changes, and the destruction of the habitats of many species. It is imperative that we learn to protect our common geophysical and biological resources. Although scientists have studied greenhouse warming for decades, it is only recently that society has begun to consider the economic, political, and institutional aspects of environmental intervention. To do so raises formidable challenges of data modeling, uncertainty, international coordination, and institutional design.Attempts to deal with complex scientific and economic issues have increasingly involved the use of models to help analysts and decision makers understand likely future outcomes as well as the implications of alternative policies. This book presents in detail a pair of models of the economics of climate change. The models, called RICE-99 (for the Regional Dynamic Integrated model of Climate and the Economy) and DICE-99 (for the Dynamic Integrated Model of Climate and the Economy) build on the authors' earlier work, particularly their RICE and DICE models of the early 1990s. They can help policy makers design better economic and environmental policies

Economics and policy issues in climate change by William D Nordhaus( Book )

16 editions published between 1998 and 2013 in English and held by 598 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Global climate change has emerged as one of the most challenging and controversial policy issues. Ìn this volume, a group of scholars e×amines economic and social aspects of the far-reaching phenomenon. Although the 1997 "summit" in Kyoto focused world attention on climate, it was just one step in an ongoing process. Research by the UN's Ìntergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (ÌPCC) has been ongoing since 1988. An e×tensive ÌPCC Working Group report published in 1995 e×amined the economic and social aspects of climate change. Ìn this volume, economists assess the ÌPCC report and address the questions which emerge. The result is a look at the actual realities of climate change and some methods (and difficulties) of dealing with them

The Swedish nuclear dilemma : energy and the environment by William D Nordhaus( )

10 editions published between 1997 and 2014 in English and held by 501 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Renowned economist William Nordhaus has developed many innovative approaches for analyzing complex environmental questions. He applies them here to the possible phaseout of nuclear power in Sweden, providing a major contribution to that debate and to the assessment of nuclear power in general. The value of The Swedish Nuclear Dilemma extends far beyond that issue, however, to careful consideration of the difficult, multi-faceted environmental and energy questions that industrialized nations and developing regions now face. In Sweden, a 1980 advisory referendum - primarily a response to safety concerns - called for phasing out nuclear power by 2010. Numerous developments since 1980, howevertechnological, environmental, economic, and politicalnecessitate a fresh look at the referendum. Nordhaus examines the Swedish nuclear question, deploying an innovative economic model that can be applied successfully to similarity difficult issues. Using his Swedish Energy and Environmental Policy model, Nordhaus analyzes the impact on the nuclear issue of significant new factors, such as the possible deregulation of electricity generation and Sweden's global climate change policy. The decline of Swedish economic growth, the rethinking of its welfare state, and the limitations of other available energy sources underlie his study. What are the costs and benefits of eliminating nuclear power? What are the economic ramifications of various energy and environmental options? Is a phaseout the most prudent approach? The Swedish Nuclear Dilemma sheds new light on these crucial questions. It also sets the stage for more informed analysis of similar complex issues in other countries where economic and environmental goals clash

Much is written in the popular literature about the current pace of technological change. But do we have enough scientific knowledge about the sources and management of innovation to properly inform policymaking in technology dependent domains such as energy and the environment? While it is agreed that technological change does not 'fall from heaven like autumn leaves, ' the theory, data, and models are deficient. The specific mechanisms that govern the rate and direction of inventive activity, the drivers and scope for incremental improvements that occur during technology diffusion, and the sp
