Ancient society by Lewis Henry Morgan ( Book )
284 editions published between 1877 and 2013 in 10 languages and held by 3,381 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
"Ancient Society defines three major stages in the cultural and social evolution of mankind. Morgan describes how savages, advancing by definite steps, attained the higher condition of barbarism. He then explores how barbarians, by similar progressive advancement, finally attained civilization. Finally he discusses why other tribes and nations have been left behind in the race of progress. Inventions and discoveries show the similarity of human wants at the same stages of advancement, thus demonstrating the psychic unity of mankind. The idea of property - now an obsession in civilized society - underwent a similar process of growth and development, as did the principles of government. By the "comparative method" of using existing and historical societies as examples of previous stages, the history of human progress could be reconstructed. These parallel lines along the pathways of human progress form the principal subjects of discussion in Ancient Society."--Jacket

Volume 4 examines the architecture and the influences of architecture on the social life of many North American Indians. One of the aspects the author surmised from his study of the architecture was that the family unit seemed insufficient to face all the struggles necessary for life, so larger organizations of several families were most common in North America, rather than single-family households. The author also noted that households tended be formed of related individuals, making kinship between the families of mothers and families of their children an important aspect of the social organization and living arrangements

Modern anthropology would be radically different without this book. Published in 1871, this first major study of kinship, inventive and wide-ranging, created a new field of inquiry in anthropology. Drawing partly upon his own fieldwork among American Indians, anthropologist Lewis Henry Morgan examined the kinship systems of over one hundred cultures, probing for similarities and differences in their organization. In his attempt to discover particular types of marriage and descent systems across the globe, Morgan demonstrated the centrality of kinship relations in many cultures. Kinship, it was revealed, was an important key for understanding cultures and could be studied through systematic, scientific means
