Assessing psychopathology and behavior problems in persons with mental retardation : a review of available instruments : report prepared for the National Institute of Mental Health by Michael G Aman( Book )

3 editions published in 1991 in English and held by 326 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This survey of the instruments and methods that are currently available for assessing mental health problems in persons with mental retardation lists formalized instruments and interview techniques and evaluates them from a methodological perspective. Emphasis is on the assessment and classification of disorders rather than on the evaluation of adaptive behaviors or treatment effects. Information was solicited from several professional organizations with an interest in behavior, psychopathology, and developmental disabilities through letters sent to 50 prominent researchers and through computer searches of the literature. Approximately 40 relevant instruments were identified. These are described in three sections: (1) the more established instruments, most of which have been published, with detailed descriptions and thorough critiques; (2) relatively new or unpublished instruments, with brief summaries and critiques; and (3) relevant instruments considered peripheral to assessment of behavior disorders, with brief descriptions and no appraisal of psychometric characteristics. Eight tables summarize information about the instruments. Three appendices provide supplemental information about the survey process and the instruments reviewed. (Sld)
A child's world : as seen in his stories and drawings by Mary H Lystad( Book )

2 editions published in 1974 in English and held by 322 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Children's own stories and drawings as well as data on children's choices for reading material were analyzed by race, sex, and age for preferences in settings, actors, and need representation. Books for children chosen by literary critics and by persons who buy books for children were also analyzed for what children and adults look for in these books in terms of settings, actors, and needs. Children's creative writing and children's and adults' book choices were compared to ascertain similarities and differences in depiction of social behavior. The children in the study were 540 first, third, and fifth graders in six racially integrated schools in New Orleans. Many of their stories and drawings are included. Appendices contain lists of book choices of children and for children, adult reviewer book choices for children in 1971-1972, best-selling children's books for 1971-1972, and a comparison of early American, modern Russian, and Chinese books for children. Special report : schizophrenia, 1980 by Loren R Mosher( Book )

5 editions published between 1980 and 1981 in English and held by 236 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The review and analysis of the current status of knowledge about schizophrenia and its treatment begins with a brief review of some statistics on mental health, the National Institute of Mental Health's grants program in schizophrenia, an NIMH-sponsored international conference on Schizophrenia - the Implications of Research Findings for Treatment and Training, and the Center for Studies of Schizophrenia. A synthesis of recent and current research in schizophrenia covers the following topics: diagnosis, description, and psychological functions; genetics; biology; studies of populations at high risk; family interaction and processes; childhood schizophrenia and autism; and treatment. Problems of two types facing schizophrenia are noted - attitudinal barriers and issues of scientific fact. Six of the most pressing unresolved or controversial scientific questions are detailed. References for each topic discussed are listed. (Kw)
