Kiki Smith : a gathering, 1980-2005 by Siri Engberg( Book )

7 editions published between 2005 and 2006 in English and held by 607 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Widely considered to be one of the most engaging and fascinating artists of our time, Kiki Smith has, over the past 25 years, developed into a major figure in the world of 21st-century art. Her subject matter is as wide-ranging as the materials her work has encompassed. In the 1980s, with her earliest figural sculptures in plaster, glass, and wax, Smith developed an elaborate vocabulary around the forms and functions of the body and its metaphorical as well as physical relationship to society. By the early 1990s she began to engage with themes of a more religious and mythological nature. Her re-imaginings of biblical women as inhabitants of physical bodies--rather than as abstract bearers of doctrine--led her to make a series of sculptural works related to the figure of the Virgin Mary, Mary Magdalene, Lilith, and others. The artist has more recently considered fairy tales and folk narratives as well as nurturing a growing menagerie of work concerned with animals and the natural world. Smith has now earned a considerable reputation as a virtuoso printmaker and draftsperson, and as a re-inventor of the startling sculptural possibitilies present in materials ranging from paper and resin to bronze and porcelain. Organized by the Walker Art Center with the full collaboration of the artist, the exhibition Kiki Smith represents the artist¹s first full-scale touring museum retrospective in the United States. This accompanying exhibition catalogue is a comprensive volume that includes critical essays, an interview, a generous four-color plate section, a complete exhibition history and bibliography, and the first-ever comprehensive illustrated chronology of Smith¹s life and work

Billy Al Bengston : paintings of three decades by Billy Al Bengston( Book )

6 editions published in 1988 in English and held by 280 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This beautiful volume chronicles the ever-changing work of Billy Al Bengston - art that spans a period of thirty years, encompasses a variety of materials, and consistently defies stylistic classification. With colleagues Edward Kienholz, Edward Ruscha, and Kenneth Price, Bengston was a leader in the art revolution that transformed Los Angeles from art backwater to international art center beginning in the 1960s. His own widely acclaimed work has changed dramatically from decade to decade, reflecting the artist's independent spirit and firm belief in the open-endedness of the creative process. Bengston has said, "A work of art should never be predictable...if each time you look at it you see something new, find that it means something more, something different, then you are on the track of art." Inspired by the various environments in which he has lived and worked - from California and Hawaii to London and Mexico - Bengston vibrantly evokes in his works the colors, lights, and patterns of these locales. This book visually chronicles the evolution of the artist's pictorial investigations, from his early paintings that conjure up the metallic and chrome-plated car culture of Los Angeles to the later Hawaiian images that opulently evoke this island paradise. Lavishly illustrated with sixty full-color plates of Bengston's paintings, collages, watercolors, screens, and banners, the book reveals the true radiance of his palette and his continual process of experimentation. Insightful essays by Henry T. Hopkins, Jane Livingston, Karen Tsujimoto, and Maurice Tuchman provide a welcome overview for admirers of Bengston's art and a splendid introduction for those as yet unfamiliar with it. This volume offers an illuminating appraisal of an artist of enormous originality, range, and achievement, whose glowing canvases reward the viewer with prolonged visual pleasure. -- from front cover flap

Jim Love : from now on by Lynn M Herbert( Book )

5 editions published in 2006 in English and held by 261 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Jim Love: From Now On is the first publication to celebrate Houston sculptor Jim Love's work in over 20 years. Love first gained national recognition in 1961 when his work was included in The Museum of Modern Art's groundbreaking exhibition The Art of Assemblage. He began his career as an urban archaeologist of sorts, scouring junkyards for interesting castoffs and later welding original forms of iron and steel. Inspired by the Surrealist- and Dada-influenced practice of assemblage, he elevated ordinary objects to inventive and often amusing works of art that include his early "put togethers" from the 1950s; his signature bears, birds, and dogs that take on life's dilemmas; his range of work that explores flowers as a motif; and his portraits, theatrical tableaux, and designs for furniture and other functional objects. A central figure in Houston art circles from the 1950s until his untimely death in 2005, Love most notably collaborated with the collectors John and Dominique de Menil. Known for his public commissions in Houston, such as Call Ernie (1985) at William P. Hobby Airport and Portable Trojan Bear (1974) in Hermann Park, Love's work is also included in the permanent collections of the Whitney Museum of American Art and The Museum of Modern Art in New York; the Dallas Museum of Art; The Menil Collection, Houston; and The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. Love was born in 1927 in Amarillo, Texas, and moved to Houston after his graduation from Baylor University, where he received a BBA (1952) in business administration."--Publisher's website

Radical presence : black performance in contemporary art( Book )

3 editions published in 2013 in English and held by 209 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Radical Presence: Black Performance in Contemporary Art, the first comprehensive survey of performance art by black visual artists. While black performance has been largely contextualized as an extension of theater, visual artists have integrated performance into their work for over five decades, generating a repository of performance work that has gone largely unrecognized until now. Radical Presence provides a critical framework to discuss the history of black performance traditions within the visual arts beginning with the "happenings" of the early 1960s, throughout the 1980s, and into the present practices of contemporary artists."--Publisher's website
