On the problem of estimating the number of schools of fish by
Jerzy Neyman(
Book
)
9 editions published in 1949 in English and Undetermined and held by 67 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
The present study was undertaken in connection with the recent rapid decline in the annual catch of California sardines. This decline was observed in spite of a reported steady increase in fishing effort, and created considerable anxiety. Also it caused efforts to develop methods of using such data as are or may be available from fishing crews to obtain reasonably accurate estimates of the population of sardines in California waters. Since sardines travel and are caught in schools, the problem of estimating the whole population splits into two parts: the problem of the number of schools in a fishing ground and the problem of the number od sardines in a school. The present paper deals only with the first of these problems and strives to use the minimum of records which could reasonably be expected from commercial fishermen

3 editions published between 1982 and 1998 in English and held by 8 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Jerzy Neyman received the National Medal of Science "for laying the foundations of modern statistics and devising tests and procedures that have become essential parts of the knowledge of every statistician." Until his death in 1981 at the age of 87, Neyman was vigorously involved in the concerns and controversies of the day, a scientist whose personality and activity were integral parts of his contribution to science. Through conversations with Neyman as well as the author's access to his personal and professional letters and papers, this book presents the life story of the statistician
