2 editions published in 1971 in English and held by 615 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This anthology presents 43 American sermons in the context of the social, cultural, and historical development of America. Two or more sermons treat the pro and con viewpoints on nineteen specific issues--from seventeenth century Puritan debates on the authority of God, to the pre-Civil War slavery controversy, to the current questions of Popular vs. Experimental Religion and race relations. Original sermons by such homilists as John Cotton, William Jennings Bryan, Reinhold Niebuhr, and Carl McIntire are reprinted. Contemporary authorities, each associated with a college or seminary, provide an introduction to each set of sermons and the issues with which these sermons are concerned. (Ll)

Perspectives on communication in social conflict by Gerald R Miller( Book )

3 editions published in 1974 in English and held by 411 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book suggests new approaches to the role played by communication in social conflict situations. In "a Transactional Paradigm of Verbalized Social Conflict," C. David Mortensen calls for a transactional approach to the study of communication and conflict. Fred Jandt's "Communication and the Simulation of Social Conflict" stresses the advantages of simulating social conflict. In "Communication in Game Theoretic Models of Conflict," Thomas Steinfatt and Gerald Miller summarize and extend a body of research conducted in the tradition of tightly controlled laboratory studies. Phillip Tompkins, Jeanne Fisher, Dominic Infante, and Elaine Tompkins employ field research techniques to investigate attitudes toward "Conflict and Communication Within the University." John Bowers uses the case study to illustrate "Communication Strategies in Conflicts Between Institutions and Their Clients." A conceptual analysis of the relationship between persuasion and the use of threats and inducements is offered in "The Carrot and Stick as Handmaidens of Persuasion in Conflict Situations" by Herbert W. Simons. There is an extensive bibliography at the end of the book. (Rb)
Intercultural communication theory( Book )

2 editions published in 1995 in English and held by 384 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Comprehensive and far-reaching -- Intercultural Communication Theory brings together current theories on this important and ever-growing area. The text advances some of the work from previous International and Intercultural Communication Annuals, and also introduces new theoretical developments. These diverse explanatory approaches offer guidelines for investigating the complex phenomenon of intercultural communication. The theories in this text range in their approach, from systems theory to ethnographic analyses, and focus on a range of intercultural theories, from accommodation theory to cultural intolerance. Part I provides an overview of the role of theory in intercultural communication research. Part II includes theories on intercultural communication competence and adaptation, and Part III focuses on specific contexts for intercultural communication, such as health and small groups.
