The extension of man : a history of physics before the quantum by J. D Bernal( Book )

33 editions published between 1970 and 1973 in English and held by 847 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The late J.D. Bernal's lectures given to first-year students in physics at Birkbeck College, University of London, are presented here in their entirety, tracing the history of physics up to the end of the classical era at the end of 19th century, just before the discoveries of the subatom and relatively were made. In view of the prestige and profundity of the newer discoveries, Bernal felt that the classical era was being largely forgotten. In this book, he attributes a greater relevance to the work of men from the distant past than is usually given. For instance, the idea of atom not only retains the language of the Greek, Democritus, who first postulated it, but there is also an absolutely unbroken connection between the atom of the Greek and that of the modern physicist. Bernal felt that the historical method would be a suitable introduction to the fundamental concepts of physics, and it is hoped that the readers of the book will be able to see something of the interplay between the theoretical and practical aspects of the subject

The world, the flesh & the devil; an enquiry into the future of the three enemies of the rational soul by J. D Bernal( Book )

23 editions published between 1929 and 2018 in English and held by 505 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Written by the pioneering scientist, theorist and activist J. D. Bernal, this futuristic essay explores the radical changes to human bodies and intelligence that science may bring about, and suggests the impact of these developments on society. Bernal presents a far-reaching vision of the future that encompasses space research and colonization, material sciences, genetic engineering, and the technological hive mind. In his view, it will be possible for the conditions of civilization to reach a state of materialist utopia. For all three realms - the world, the flesh, and the devil - Bernal attempted to map out the utmost limit of technoscientific progress, and found that there are almost no limits."--Back cover

Science in history. conclusion by J. D Bernal( Book )

50 editions published between 1965 and 2011 in English and Undetermined and held by 74 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This volume, the last of four, includes parts seven and eight of the eight parts in the series. Part Seven deals with the sciences of society which are described as the latest and most imperfect of the sciences. It is doubtful if, in their present form, they can be called sciences at all. The historical development of the social sciences is traced up until 1848. From this point on, two divergent systems, capitalism and socialism, are traced. Part Eight attempts to summarize the development of science and technique throughout human history and to assess the meaning of this development in the present and the future. (Author/TS)

Science in history by J. D Bernal( Book )

41 editions published between 1954 and 2011 in English and Undetermined and held by 71 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This volume, the third of four, includes part six of the eight parts in the series. The author writes of a "second scientific revolution" in the twentieth century and states "for the first time in history science and scientists have been involved directly and overtly in the major economic, industrial, and military developments of their time." This involvement is written of in terms of monopoly and imperialism, science in socialist economies, science in the under-developed world, international cooperation, interaction of industry and science, and in terms of power requirements for society and automatic control of industrial operations. The progress of the physical and the biological sciences are traced separately. The development of atomic physics is given primary significance in the physical sciences. A major transformation in the biological sciences is attributed to the explanation of biological phenomena in atomic terms. (Author/TS)
Science in History by J. D Bernal( Book )

45 editions published between 1965 and 2012 in English and held by 61 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This volume, the first of four, includes the first three of the eight parts in the series. Part One states the major problems and includes some general discussion on the nature and method of science and on the place of science in society. Part Two deals with the emergence of science from the centers of Babylonia, Egypt and India to its full formulation in Greece, where the rational basis for science as we know it was first worked out. Science faded in Rome and Western Europe, only to be synthesized in Syria, Persia, India and China and to emerge again in Europe under the banner of Islam. Part Three deals with the recovery and slow growth of science and technology through Islam and Christendom to the end of the Middle Ages. (Author/TS)
Science in history by J. D Bernal( Book )

49 editions published between 1965 and 2010 in English and held by 60 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This volume, the second of four, includes parts four and five of the eight parts in the series. Part Four deals with what is called the Scientific Revolution from 1440-1690. This "revolution" is divided into three phases: Phase 1 (1440-1540) includes the Renaissance and the Reformation, during which the world-picture adopted from classical times was challenged, primarily by Copernicus; Phase 2 (1540-1650) saw the challenge completed with the establishment of new experimental methods; and Phase 3 (1650-1690) marked the triumph of the new science, its spread to new fields, the organization of science societies, and a new mathematical-mechanical philosophy. Part Four deals with the Industrial Revolution (1690-1900) and the growth and inner transformation of the economic system of capitalism. In science the developments of the electromagnetic, atomic, and evolutionary theories are seen as culminations of the period, with the steam-engine and growth of the use of iron and steel as the technological breakthroughs.
