Introduction to Aristotle by Aristotle( Book )

60 editions published between 1941 and 1994 in English and held by 2,827 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This Introduction to Aristotle is a presentation in which Aristotle is permitted to speak for himself in the context of a sketched scheme of the relation of what he says in one treatise to what he says elsewhere. The seven introductions which precede these seven works place them in their contexts by describing their relations to other works or parts of works, their place in the scheme of the Aristotelian sciences, and the fashion in which the subjects treated in the sciences they expound may be considered in the approaches proper to other sciences in the system. - Preface

On knowing--the natural sciences by Richard McKeon( )

15 editions published between 1994 and 2018 in English and Undetermined and held by 807 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

When teaching introductory courses at the University of Chicago, Richard McKeon would often comment that "any problem pushed far enough is philosophic". His point was that philosophizing is not just the technical province of academic professionals but an important aspect of all thoughtful undertakings. The present volume explores the consequences of this idea in the disciplines of the natural sciences, with particular focus on physics. It is based on McKeon's lectures and his expositions of texts during discussions and presents a uniquely detailed record of his educational practice. Focusing on understanding recurring issues in the disciplines and fundamental assumptions present in arguments about those issues, it provides an introduction to philosophy as McKeon conceived of it. This book grew out of the first of a series of three courses McKeon invented and taught at Chicago in the 1950s and 1960s. The lectures and discussions included are based on transcriptions of a collection of tape recordings made by an unknown individual or individuals in 1963. The discussions are based on five classic texts in Physics: Plato's "Timaeus," Aristotle's "Physics," Galileo Galilei's "Dialogues Concerning Two New Sciences," Henry Crew and Alfonso de Salvio's "Newton's Philosophy of Nature: Selections from his Writings," and J. Clerk Maxwell's "Matter and Motion." (Jrh)

Edicts by Aśoka( Book )

29 editions published between 1958 and 1978 in English and held by 710 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Asoka, the remarkable Indian ruler of third century B.C., who not only renounced the warlike policies of his early career but actually made a public proclamation of his errors, left a record of his teachings which he hoped would endure forever. It was inscribed on stone, not as a monument to himself but as a record of moral law. "The Edicts of Asoka," writes Richard McKeon in his Foreword, "form part of a large body of literature, drawn from all cultures, which seeks power not in domination of men or accumulation of possessions but in conquest of self, in understanding of others, and in conquest of self, in understanding of others, and in contemplation of truths within the scope of reason and goods within the scope of action ... The classics of this literature may take on a new importance and a new power in the world today."--Back cover

Rhetoric : essays in invention and discovery by Richard McKeon( Book )

9 editions published in 1987 in English and held by 449 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In his pursuit of rhetoric's fundamental qualities, McKeon ventures far beyond a verbal art of persuasion. He details a history in which rhetoric functions as a tool for creating disciplines, arts, systems, and methods. Expression has always been an important element of rhetoric, but rhetoric also can serve as an organizational principle that provides the framework within which we can reveal and arrange the significant parts of any human undertaking

Neural Networks for Electronics Hobbyists : A Non-Technical Project-Based Introduction by Richard T McKeon( )

3 editions published in 2018 in English and held by 35 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Learn how to implement and build a neural network with this non-technical, project-based book as your guide. As you work through the chapters, you'll build an electronics project, providing a hands-on experience in training a network. There are no prerequisites here and you won't see a single line of computer code in this book. Instead, it takes a hardware approach using very simple electronic components. You'll start off with an interesting non-technical introduction to neural networks, and then construct an electronics project. The project isn't complicated, but it illustrates how back propagation can be used to adjust connection strengths or weights and train a network. By the end of this book, you'll be able to take what you've learned and apply it to your own projects. If you like to tinker around with components and build circuits on a breadboard, Neural Networks for Electronics Hobbyists is the book for you."--
