"Mary O'Hara was born in County Sligo, Western Ireland on May 12, 1935. The daughter of a civil engineer and a mother who was a pianist, by age 8 young Mary was entered in a Sligo Feis Ceoil (Annual Irish event) in which she won 2 First prizes in music and drama. At age 16 she made her first broadcast on Radio Eireann, and followed up with a visit to London to do publicity for the An Tostal (Irish Festival Of Welcome). By age 18 she had appeared on radio all over Ireland and made frequent weekly broadcasts with the Radio Eireann Light Orchestra. In the summer of 1954 when she was 19 she travelled to Africa with her Father who was an officer with the colonial office. Here she sang songs of traditional Irish fare, Mozart, Greig, Elizabethan songs and Negro Spirituals. In 1955 she went to the Edinburgh Festival and appeared with some of her Irish actor friends on the fringe of the proceedings which is a well known part of the annual event still. Following on success after success on BBC television, Miss O'Hara won audiences everywhere with her voice singing traditional Irish songs. She uses a Tara Standing Harp better known as an Irish harp on her recordings and in concerts. Of the selection of tunes, six compositions are sung in Gaelic language, "The Weaving Song", "Eileen Aroon" composed by Gerald O'Daly, a 16th century harpist known for his music. The others are "Fill, Fill a Run O", "Dileen O Deamus", "Ceol an Phiobaire" and "Aililiu Na Gamnha". Then Miss O'Hara had quite a long spell away from the music scene, returning in the 1970's and 1980's as a mature voice in traditional Irish music. She continues to delight with her concerts and recordings showcasing Irish music of centuries gone by. This recording from Beltona (via Decca in the UK) and released on London BBLA-13 was put out in Australia in the late 1950's. As a bonus to the Irish melodies, I have included 5 traditional songs by George Hegan with the piano accompaniment of Melbourne's gifted Leslie Miers. George was born in Belfast in Ireland during the years of the Second World War. As a boy soprano he joined the Belfast Boys' Choir and sang for many years till his voice broke. As a teenager, he migrated with his parents to Australia and really studied seriously the classical vocal repertoire winning many first prizes, including the Sun Aria and later outright winner of the Hartwell Aria. He joined the "Q" Theatre Guild to gain theatrical experience and has studied much operatic repertoire, singing the tenor role in "Faust" in 1962 at the University Of Melbourne Conservatorium season. Quite an experienced oratorio singer George has appeared in "St. Matthew's Passion" and "St. John's Passion" to his great credit."-- publisher's note
