Reading comprehension : new directions for classroom practice by John D McNeil( Book )

8 editions published between 1984 and 1992 in English and held by 737 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Intended for use in undergraduate and graduate courses in reading methods, as well as by classroom teachers, this book brings together teaching strategies and materials suggested by recent developments in the study of reading comprehension. Each of the eight chapters includes the background and rationale for the practices described. The first three chapters contain much of the constructivist theory that is important in understanding newer teaching and learning strategies. The emphasis in these chapters is upon assimilation in reading, the linking of prior experiences to new information and knowledge. The fourth chapter emphasizes accommodation, the modification of those preconceptions or alternate frameworks that keep students from acquiring and using new knowledge from text. The fifth chapter illustrates how studies of metacognition relate to teaching students to learn more effectively as independent readers. The last three chapters provide new strategies for vocabulary development, following the structure of a passage, identifying a writer's technique, and formulating the main thought of a passage. (Hod)

Oral and non-oral methods of teaching reading by an auto-instructional device by John D McNeil( Book )

4 editions published in 1963 in English and held by 55 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

An attempt was made to determine whether there exists any relationship between oral response in learning to read and achievement in recognition and understanding of written words and sentences. The technique of programed instruction was chosen for and experiment with 182 kindergarten children. Three aspects were investigated--an experimental phase, a followup of the learners' progress, and an application of the autoinstructional program in the kindergarten. Oral response by beginning readers facilitated the recognition and comprehension of printed words and sentences. The oral response was of significant value even though the post-test called for silent reading. It was concluded that the act of vocalization during instruction was an aid to the beginning reader. Followup study results suggested that inferiority of boys in learning to read may be attributable to social influences in the classroom. The principle finding was documentation of the great range in individual reading progress

Adapting a beginning reading program for Spanish-speaking children by John D McNeil( Book )

2 editions published in 1968 in English and held by 3 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

A beginning reading program for spanish-speaking children is reported. A study, sponsored by the southwest regional laboratory for educational research and development (swrl), developed learning sequences for a beginning reading program for kindergarten classrooms with spanish-speaking children throughout the southwest region. Each of 21 10-minute programed lessons developed was presented through a tape recorder and visual displays on cards to spanish-speaking preschool children. Each child was required to make about 60 oral respones during each lesson. Instructions in english were gradually substituted for instructions in spanish only after the child had mastered the task. The child was always asked to respond in english. Correct feedback was provided through prompting and confirmation. The test scores of spanish-speaking children who received instruction through this programed adjunct, when compared with the test scores of english-speaking children who received regualr classroom instruction, supported the thesis that it is possible to increase the probabilities of reading success for spanish-speaking children after careful identification of learner tasks and selection of instructional practices that elicit the desired response to printed stimuli. This paper was presented at the american educational research association conference (chicago, february 6-10, 1968). (ns)
Children and chess : a guide for educators by Alexey W Root( Book )

2 editions published in 2006 in Undetermined and English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

"Children and Chess: A Guide for Educators is the first book to show the connection between accepted educational theories and chess. The relationship of chess to academic and humanistic educational goals is convincingly illustrated as curriculum and psychological theories from John D. McNeil, Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, and Howard Gardner are outlined and applied to the question "why chess?" Children and Chess features lessons plans teachers can use immediately, and from which they can learn the basics of the game. Since the plans meet academic goals through chess, teachers also learn that chess can be a part of reading, math, science, and social studies. An appendix showing how chess meets the requirements of curriculum standards is another plus."--Jacket
