Book
)
8 editions published in 1975 in English and held by 343 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
This book, written for the nonspecialist, concentrates on three issues that are likely to have major impact on the future of public elementary and secondary education. The first issue is the improvement of family choice in the selection of educational services. The issue here is essentially one of the structure of the financing of education. The second issue is whether and how the technological efficiency of schools can be enhanced. This issue deals with the question of how well the amount of money needed to run the schools can be determined. The third issue is how educational services are distributed to different client groups and how the money to buy those services can be raised. (Author/IRT)

The Stanford-Berkeley Seminar on School Finance and Organization was convened to reexamine the problems that underlay the educational finance reform movement, to consider the new problems caused by that movement, and to recommend research topics and study areas that could help alleviate those problems in years to come. The eight papers discussed and revised during the five months of the seminar and presented in full in this document (1) assess the role of the courts in the development of the educational finance reform movement; (2) consider the relationship between equity and fiscal neutrality in the light of state actions; (3) argue that the business model for understanding school organization is inadequate and its application hazardous; (4) point out the dangers in assuming larger schools and districts are more efficient; (5) examine the implications of changing fertility rates; (6) build on the literature in economics of time, time budget analysis, and child pyschology to explore how a child's use of time outside school affects academic performance; (7) reject the human capital model for understanding the relationship between schooling and work; and (8) urge adoption of "recurrent education" as a technique for keeping the society economically and educationally vital. Precise, appeared until the recent crisis - to many Americans from the East of America's America, as the whole of America seemed to Europeans of a century ago: extreme and strange, full of violent contrasts, contradictory, over-advanced, neo primitive and savage, a land where everything is possible, the hippies and the religious-political fundamentalism of the Orange County, Marcuse, Angela Davis and Norman Brown, Esalen, the new consciousness. Alan Watts and Carlos Castaneda, as well as Patricia Hearst and the Sym bionese Liberation Army, Richard Nixon and his men, the Satan religion, outrageous crimes such as that of the Manson "family" and incredibly scan dalous business deals. For better or worse, California appears as a sort of preview of the European society of the future: the land of the Western World with the greatest immigration and population growth, with enormous cities which in the textbooks of your childhood were hardly even mentioned, e.g. Los Angeles, or were not mentioned at all, as in the case of San Diego and San Jose, a considerable urban development which has taken place almost overnight

Some reflections on the honorable profession of teaching by
Trish Stoddart(
Book
)
2 editions published between 1984 and 1985 in English and held by 38 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
This monograph presents analyses of some of the factors that impinge upon the quality of schooling in California. The first section addresses teacher certification and professional standards; it touches briefly upon the matter of raising teacher salaries and improving teacher career structures. The teacher's role in classroom quality control is considered in section two. Findings are presented from studies on teacher behavior and pupil progress and students' involvement with the learning process. In the third section, the selection of teachers is discussed within the framework of the decline of teacher quality and state approval of teacher education programs. The state's role in assuring teacher academic competence is considered with recommendations on examinations for teacher candidates and entrance requirements for teacher education programs. The fourth section examines state policy in the preparation of teachers with recommendations on restructuring schools of education and facilitating the entry of first year teachers. The final section explores how to retain good teachers in the classroom. Five recommendations for improving teacher preparation programs and the teaching profession are offered. A four-page bibliography concludes the document. (Jd)
