Faust : a tragedy : interpretive notes, contexts, modern criticism by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe( Book )

230 editions published between 1800 and 2018 in 4 languages and held by 2,638 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Faust is the protagonist of a classic German legend. He is a scholar who is highly successful yet dissatisfied with his life, so he makes a pact with the Devil, exchanging his soul for unlimited knowledge and worldly pleasures. The Faust legend has been the basis for many literary, artistic, cinematic, and musical works that have reinterpreted it through the ages. Faust and the adjective Faustian imply a situation in which an ambitious person surrenders moral integrity in order to achieve power and success for a delimited term. The Faust of early books - as well as the ballads, dramas, movies, and puppet-plays which grew out of them - is irrevocably damned because he prefers human to divine knowledge; "he laid the Holy Scriptures behind the door and under the bench, refused to be called doctor of Theology, but preferred to be styled doctor of Medicine". Plays and comic puppet theatre loosely based on this legend were popular throughout Germany in the 16th century, often reducing Faust and Mephistopheles to figures of vulgar fun. The story was popularised in England by Christopher Marlowe, who gave it a classic treatment in his play, The Tragical History of Doctor Faustus. In Goethe's reworking of the story two hundred years later, Faust becomes a dissatisfied intellectual who yearns for "more than earthly meat and drink" in his life. - Amazon (summary for a later edition of this title)

Faust : parts one and two by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe( Book )

71 editions published between 1856 and 2018 in 3 languages and held by 1,590 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Hailed as Germany's greatest contribution to world literature, Goethe's Faust drew upon a folktale and Marlowe's Dr. Faustus for inspiration. But in this epic version, Faust sells his soul not for magic powers but for a heightened sense of existence. Part One covers his pact with Mephistopheles and seduction of an innocent girl; Part Two relates his courtship of Helen of Troy and his salvation. Acclaimed translation by Bayard Taylor

"This work by an eminent writer and artist is probably the outstanding book on the early gold rush in California. The author's description of the Constitutional Convention at Monterey is the best we have, as are also the views he gives us the earliest mining camps."
Hannah Thurston: a story of American life by Bayard Taylor( Book )

81 editions published between 1863 and 2016 in English and Undetermined and held by 1,085 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Hannah Thurston ... the daughter of Quaker parents, has herself been brought up a Quaker, but has strayed beyond the limits prescribed by George Fox and Robert Barclay, and can hardly be said to be a Quaker at all. She has made humanity her God, and philanthropy her worship. She has devoted herself body and soul to the assertion of woman's rights, and insists that woman has a right to be treated as a man, to enter public life, or to enter any public career, as a man, or to vote or be voted for as a man. She is, or wishes to be, a man-woman, and to force all men to recognize and respect her manly claims ..."--Brownson's Quarterly Review, July, 1864
