The British National Health Service : policy trends and their implication for education by Gordon McLachlan( Book )

13 editions published in 1975 in English and French and held by 215 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The opening section of the document provides a brief perspective of the National Health Service (nhs) in England and Wales, which forms a background for the discussion presented in the rest of the report. The second section, Retrospect, gives a historical survey of the evolution of the nhs from the previous health care supply system, with responsibility placed at the regional and local levels, and maintaining the strong emphasis on general practice. Section Three, Prospect, considers current reforms in the nhs, including discussion of the aims of the reformed service, current strategies for change, and significant omissions from the general strategy. Section Four, Horizons of Quality, focuses on the implications of the concepts of quality and accountability on the people and institutions involved in the nhs and on future policy formation and planning. The fifth section, Reconnaissance on the Educational Front, looks at present available formal and informal education in the health care field, and at the needs for definition of educational objectives, identification of groups to be trained, content to be covered, and the place of the institution as new education and training programs are planned. A review section concludes the document. (Sa)

Skotland, eire, østrig, brd, ungarn, ussr, sverige, danmark. The purpose of these studies was to obtain an overall view of the re- gional planning of health services in europe. The 8 countries visited are different culturally and socially, and each is unique in its his- tory, geography and topography. Consequently no uniform approach was adopted in the studies. The approach, therefore, was informal. This study of planning in various european countries is intended to des- cribe the experience of countries with different political and eco- nomic systems. The accounts of each country when taken together ac- cord significantly with other studies using different approaches and demonstrate not only the wide variety of systems in operation but also the marked similarity of most of the residual problems, which may well be basic problems, attributable as much to human failings as to effects of forms and structures . Regionalization in the coun- tries studied. Some planning issues. Health services financing. The health information system and health services research as a basis for development
The Public/private mix for health : the relevance and effects of change( Book )

8 editions published in 1982 in English and held by 147 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book comprises a series of commissioned essays following on a preliminary study directed towards the major criticisms of the economics of the NHS which have been made over the years, and of the relevant experiences in other countries using different methods and systems of finance to those applying here. Good descriptions of the health care systems of those countries are available to fill out those features referred to in the essays. The text as a whole is designed to provide a mosaic of discussion within the framework of this introduction and the finale of most of the elements which are frequently assumed would be part of any system which could conceivably be regarded as an option open to a British Government set on reforming the finances of the NHS. In particular what was specially notable in the preliminary reconnaissance was the extent of control and regulation which had become almost universally applicable to health service systems here and abroad
