In the village of Werst in the Carpathian mountains of Transylvania (then part of Austria-Hungary), some mysterious things are occurring and the villagers believe that Chort (the devil) occupies the castle. A visitor to the region, Count Franz de Télek, is intrigued by the stories and decides to go to the castle and investigate. He finds that the owner of the castle is Baron Rodolphe de Gortz, with whom he is acquainted; years earlier, they were rivals for the affections of the celebrated Italian prima donna La Stilla. The Count thought that La Stilla was dead, but he sees her image and voice coming from the castle. "The Carpathian Castle" is thought to be Bram Stoker's inspiration for his classic novel "Dracula"

Yukon was not a place for only the gold miners - there were dozens of different indigenous tribes living in the area. 'Children of the Frost' is a short story collection by Jack London, and most of its stories tell about the life of the local indigenous people. The stories take us to see shamans, tribal wars and the conflict - and sometimes friendship - between the local and white men.The collection includes ten exciting stories set in Klondike. Jack London (1876-1916) was an American writer and social activist. He grew up in the working class, but became a worldwide celebrity and one of the highest paid authors of his time. He wrote several novels, which are considered classics today, among these 'Call of the Wild', 'Sea Wolf' and 'White Fang'. [Elib]
