Jean Piaget, although internationally acclaimed for his revolutionary ideas about human intellectual development and how children learn, has been misunderstood by many of those attempting to interpret his theories and apply them. Fortunately, this dialogue between Dr. Evans and Piaget provides the student and general reader with a clear and accurate explanation of his theories and how he arrived at them. As David Elkind writes in the Introduction, Piaget's findings "are effecting a veritable Copernican revolution in our understanding of the growth and functioning of the human mind."

Resistance to innovation in higher education; a social psychological exploration focused on television and the establishment by Richard I Evans( Book )

21 editions published between 1967 and 1981 in English and held by 735 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

For this case study, 80 percent (319) of the faculty at the urban university returned a questionnaire designed to identify values, personality traits, and attitudes toward instructional television (itv) and 14 teaching methods. An hypothesis derived for future research was--acceptance of innovation varies directly with the personality attribute "cosmopolitanism" and inversely with "localitness," a moderately pro-, and an extremely anti-itv group of about 60 respondents each contributed equally to an experimental group of 20, whose departments had previously rejected innovative use of itv. The forced compliance aspect of dissonance reduction in attitude change theory was tested by requiring (with reward) that the 20 produce and participate in individual and group itv presentations. Change was measured by--participants' self-reports, observation, and pre- and post-interviews, employing "cognitive role-playing." Chi square analysis of interview items showed some significant differences between experimental and control (the remaining 100 selected respondents) groups, but there were more "trends" in the predicted direction of change favorable to itv, for both groups. Finally, 75 teachers and 25 administrators interviewed at nine universities had consistently negative attitudes toward itv that were independent of university characteristics and faculty itv experience--this contrary to initial results. This book is the twelfth in a series based on discussions with outstanding contributors to the field of psychology, and the second to include discussions with a number of contributors. This series was launched in 1957 with completion of the recorded conversations with the late Carl Jung and the late Ernest Jones (Evans 1964, 1976), supported by a grant from the Fund for the Advancement of Education. Continued support for the series has been provided under a grant from the National Science Foundation. The basic purpose of the project is to produce, for teaching purposes, a series of films and books that introduce the student to significant contributors in the field of psychology. It is hoped that these films and books may also serve as documents of increasing value in the history of the behavioural sciences
