Teaching strategies for the culturally disadvantaged by Hilda Taba( Book )

13 editions published between 1966 and 1968 in English and Undetermined and held by 679 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Two curriculum sequences, designed for a group of predominantly negro sixth- and seventh-graders and for a group of white second-generation american eighth-graders, are presented here as instructional guidelines for teachers of disadvantaged students. The sixth- and seventh-grade curriculum unit on the "family of man" stresses insights into the nature of human activities and aspirations, and a comprehension of the actual and symbolic walls which people build. Peer relationships, the family, and immigration populations and problems are topics in the eighth-grade curriculum. Both curriculums emphasize an understanding of self and society. Evaluations of the two programs describe the pupils' growth in attitudes, perceptions, and academic skills. Introductory to the presentation of the two curriculums is a general description of cultural deprivation in school learning and a diagnosis of the emotional, social, and educational deficiencies and abilities of these students. Also presented is a chapter on specific instructional guidelines which includes discussion of motivation techniques, pacing, and the need for continual diagnosis of students' needs and progress as an integral part of the teaching process. Excerpts from actual class discussions and student compositions are used throughout the book. Available from rand mcnally and co., Chicago, ill. (Lb)

Teaching strategies and cognitive functioning in elementary school children by Hilda Taba( Book )

10 editions published between 1966 and 1971 in English and held by 116 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

To test the hypothesis that if given a curriculum designed to develop cognitive functioning and taught by strategies designed to develop cognitive skills, students would then master more sophisticated symbolic thought earlier and more systematically than could be expected if this development had been left to the accidents of experience or if school experien"e had been guided by less appropriate teaching strategies, a pretest-posttest control group design was used in addition to analysis of classroom interaction. Upper elementary school students were matched on mental and chronological age and iq. The control group had the usual social studies curriculum and their teachers did not receive training during the study. The three experimental groups were composed of (1) students with one or more years of exposure to the Contra Costa Social Studies Curriculum and teachers who received special training in teaching cognitive skills, (2) students new to this curriculum and teachers who received special training during the study, and (3) students new to this curriculum and teachers not specially trained in teaching cognitive skills. Generally, results confirmed the hypothesis, but they were not consistent. Limitations were an unbalanced sample and difficulty in clearly identifying the more complex teaching and thinking patterns. (Included are a 54-item bibliography and some tests and materials used.) (Sg)
Thinking in elementary school children by Hilda Taba( Book )

23 editions published between 1964 and 1975 in English and Undetermined and held by 113 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The development of thought processes under optimum training conditions was studied. Optimum was defined to include (1) a curriculum for the development of thought, (2) teaching strategies focused directly on mastery of necessary cognitive skills, and (3) a sufficient time span to permit a developmental training sequence. Children from 20 elementary school classes (grades 2 through 6) participated. Participating teachers received special training to facilitate learning of cognitive skills (categorization, interpretation, and application of principles). Methodological tools and instruments were developed and administered with the social studies inference test. Correlations between criterion test scores, intelligence, chronological age, mental age, and reading achievement were reported. Quality of the teaching strategy was the most significant single factor influencing cognitive performance. (Wn)
