The European Union : a very short introduction by John Pinder( )

74 editions published between 2001 and 2018 in English and held by 3,751 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"John Pinder writes with expert knowledge of the European Union, but in plain, readable English. He shows how and why the Union has developed from 1950 up to the present. He explains the interplay between governments and federal elements in the institutions; consensus over the single market and the environment; and conflicts over agriculture, social policies, the Euro, and frontier controls. He shows how the Union relates to its European neighbours, the United States, and the rest of the world, and outlines the choices that lie ahead. He is clear about his federalist orientation, presents the arguments fairly, and is scrupulous about the facts. This is quite simply the best short book on the subject."--Jacket

Monitoring and controlling the international transfer of technology by Critical Technologies Institute (Rand Corporation)( )

2 editions published in 1998 in English and held by 1,320 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The United States is a net exporter of technology and technical knowledge. Despite fears that this outflow of technology is costly to U.S. taxpayers, it would be impractical to institute a government-wide system for monitoring and restricting overseas technology transfers. First, a review of the economic effects of technology transfer showed that it is not possible to estimate accurately the financial effect on the United States of the international transfer of government-sponsored technology. Moreover, the methods of transfer that might be monitored or restricted are also sources of the valuable, high domestic societal return to government investments in research and development. Finally, government agencies do not see international technology transfer issues as central to their missions and are likely to see new requirements as constraints on their ability to carry out their missions. The authors thus recommend no major policy shifts but do suggest some changes in existing policy that would enhance the U.S. government's ability to trace and to capture the benefits of certain technical innovations
European Community : the building of a union by John Pinder( Book )

37 editions published between 1991 and 1995 in 3 languages and held by 1,164 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Since 1990, when this book was first written, the Maastricht Treaty has wrought major changes to the European Community. In some respects the Union created by Maastricht is more federal, in some more intergovernmental. Conflicts over the Treaty have reflected the profound divergence in people's reactions to these changes. Here John Pinder constructs a complete and coherent view of the Community. How did the Community begin? How have the Community's institutions and powers been strengthened? He looks at the moves from customs union to the single market; from the EMS to the project for economic and monetary union; from six to twelve member states and more, including the prospects for future enlargement into Central and Eastern Europe
National industrial strategies and the world economy by John Pinder( Book )

18 editions published between 1981 and 2018 in English and held by 514 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"With the economic crisis continuing into the 1980s, the necessity to adapt industrial structures to contemporary requirements became clear. This book, first published in 1982, is a volume unique in its coverage of the major countries, industries, and international relationships that together generate the dynamic of structural change. Case studies by industrial sector and country are provided, as well as thoughtful analysis of a broad range of issues, including protectionism, foreign investment, primary production vs processing and manufacture, energy requirements, market imperfections, employment, and the growth of interdependence."--Provided by publisher
