Joan of Arc : by herself and her witnesses by Régine Pernoud( Book )

74 editions published between 1961 and 2012 in 3 languages and held by 1,808 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

On Sunday, May 8, 1429, the English raised the year-long siege of Orleans. How had this come about? Everyone was attributing the victory to the “Maid bearing a banner” as set down on May 10, in the registers of the Parliament of Paris by parliamentary clerk Clement de Fauquembergue. Who was she? Whence came she? What had been her life and exploits? To these questions, asked by her contemporaries as well as by us and to whom true answers were even more important, let the historic documents themselves make answer
Joan of Arc : her story by Régine Pernoud( Book )

21 editions published between 1964 and 2000 in English and Undetermined and held by 1,797 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The peasant girl who led an army against the English and placed Charles VII on the French throne has inspired countless books since her death at age 19. While others have claimed Joan the Maid (as she called herself) for every cause from feminism to working-class radicalism, this meticulous volume by two French scholars sticks close to the known facts. The authors make extensive use of contemporary documents that bring to life the turbulent political scene in which Joan operated as well as her forceful personality. Joan followed the directives of voices she believed were sent to her by God; her deep piety, self-assurance, decisiveness, and shrewd intelligence radiate from her letters and from her responses to hostile questioning at the rigged trial that resulted in her being burned alive as a heretic in 1431. General readers may be intimidated at first by a detailed narrative studded with lengthy quotations, but those who persevere will discover a story all the more moving because it is not manipulated to make a modern-day point. This English translation updates the 1986 French volume's bibliography, supplements the biographies in part 2 with sketches of historical figures less familiar outside of France, and generally makes the book more accessible for English-language readers. --Wendy Smith

Women in the days of cathedrals by Régine Pernoud( Book )

101 editions published between 1980 and 2010 in 5 languages and held by 941 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book addresses many questions about the status of women in the Middle Ages and presents surprising answers. Readers learn that the most ancient treatise on education in France was written by a woman; and medicine was practiced regularly by women in the thirteenth century; that in the twelfth century the Order of Fontevraud gathered both monks and religious sisters under the authority of an abbess. This is a systematic study that provides a multitude of concrete examples. No aspect of feminine activity in the medieval period is neglected: administration of property, professions and commerce, intellectual life, politics, writers, educators, sovereigns, and those who enlivened the royal courts. Moreover, the author draws from the history of law and the history of events and social customs to sketch an outline of the evolution of the societal influence of women, from the freedoms and autonomy they acquired, to the decline of their public influence. This study sheds much light on the feudal and medieval periods which have so often, and mistakenly, been called a ‘dark’ age for women
Blanche of Castile by Régine Pernoud( Book )

50 editions published between 1972 and 1989 in 4 languages and held by 894 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Queen of France and very nearly of England, Blanche of Castile was a beautiful, fascinating woman and a wise and able ruler whose personality and political power dominated Western Europe in the first half of the thirteenth century. She was the granddaughter of Eleanor of Aquitaine and the mother of France's only canonized king, Louis IX, and it was her efforts that led to the great victory over England at the Battle of Bouvines. Her husband, Louis VIII died after three years on the throne, leaving Blanche as regent during her sons minority from 1226 until 1234. Due to her shrewd combination of diplomacy, beating her enemies to the punch, and her influence on Louis IX, kept a whole France for him to inherit on her death

Those terrible Middle Ages : debunking the myths by Régine Pernoud( Book )

43 editions published between 1977 and 2014 in 4 languages and held by 818 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

As she examines the many misconceptions about the "Middle Ages", the renowned French historian, Regine Pernoud, gives the reader a refreshingly original perspective on many subjects, both historical (from the Inquisition and witchcraft trials to a comparison of Gothic and Renaissance creative inspiration) as well as eminently modern (from law and the place of women in society to the importance of history and tradition). Here are fascinating insights, based on Pernoud's sound knowledge and extensive experience as an archivist at the French National Archives. The book will be provocative for the general readers as well as a helpful resource for teachers
Joan of Arc by Régine Pernoud( Book )

81 editions published between 1959 and 2011 in 4 languages and held by 804 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The retrial of Joan of Arc; the evidence at the trial for her rehabilitation, 1450-1456 by Régine Pernoud( Book )

19 editions published between 1955 and 2007 in English and Undetermined and held by 746 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"This book is the first English language book about the retrial of Joan of Arc: and clearly the best, based firmly on the testimonies given at the retrial. Written by the renowned French historian, Regine Pernoud, it uses extensive excerpts from the people who actually knew Joan, bringing to life this great woman and her powerful story. The whole tremendous and fascinating historical story is told here by her childhood playmates and relatives, her royal and noble friends, her confessor, her valet, her squires and heralds, and her fellow soldiers. Included also are excerpts from some of her enemies: their presence here lends even a more powerful authenticity to her story than if we had only heard from her friends and supporters. As we follow Pernoud through her remarkably clear, detailed tracing of this history told by living tongues, weaving the testimonies together, we begin to share with her the experience of those men who were making the investigation of Joan. Pernoud's method is direct and knowledgeable, and dedicated to the discovery and presentation of the mystical truth."--Publisher's website
The crusaders by Régine Pernoud( Book )

30 editions published between 1959 and 2003 in English and French and held by 663 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The Crusades represent one of the peaks of achievement of the medieval world, for they are an exploit unique in its kind, being neither migration nor colonization, but a movement of volunteers who came from all races of Europe, independent alike of regular resources and of centralized authority. This amazing spectacle--and conjecture about the men who took part--animates this examination of the Crusades through a better understanding of the men who lived through them. What were their modes of life, the outlook, their customs, their mentality? How did they solve their material problems of equipment, provisioning, tactics? What was it that stirred them to action, to battle, to love?
Histoire de la bourgeoisie en France by Régine Pernoud( Book )

43 editions published between 1960 and 1981 in 4 languages and held by 545 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

- N. Tricot

Hildegard of Bingen : inspired conscience of the twelfth century by Régine Pernoud( Book )

6 editions published in 1998 in English and Undetermined and held by 499 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

A Benedictine cloistered nun visited by visions expressed in the beautiful illuminated manuscripts reproduced in this volume, the founder of a religious community, a musician and composer whose works have been rediscovered in our own time and are now enjoying a tremendous popularity, a writer and poet, a naturalist and healer, and a preacher and adviser to the Pope and his Bishops, Hildegard is essential to our understanding of the twelfth century. Medieval historian Regine Pernoud draws on Hildegard's work and on her correspondence with saints, popes, emperors, and commoners to create a portrait of a woman that Matthew Fox has called "one of the greatest artists and intellectuals the world has ever seen."
