The Meinertzhagen mystery : the life and legend of a colossal fraud by Brian Garfield( )

11 editions published between 2006 and 2008 in English and held by 1,248 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Tall, handsome, charming, Col. Richard Meinertzhangen was an acclaimed British war hero, a secret agent, and a dean of international ornithology. His exploits inspired three biographies, his life has been the basis for movies, and Jerusalem dedicated a city square to his memory. Meinertzhagen was trusted by Winston Churchill, David Lloyd George, Chaim Weizmann, David Ben Gurion, T.E. Lawrence, Elspeth Huxley, and a great many others. But he bamboozled them all. Meinertzhagen was a fraud. Many of the adventures recorded in his celebrated diaries were imaginary, including a meeting with Hitler while he had a loaded pistol in his pocket, an attempt to rescue the Russian royal family in 1918, and a shoot-out with Arabs in Haifa when he was seventy years old. While he truly was a key player in Middle Eastern events after World War I and represented Zionism's interests in negotiations with Germany in the 1930, he also set up Nazi front organizations in England, committed a half-century of major and costly scientific fraud, and may have murdered his wife to boot

Miles has been waiting, carefully planning, for years--and, finally, he's ready. By threatening to expose the espionage secrets of the major powers, he set himself up as the quarry of an international manhunt. Paul Benjamin was an ordinary New Yorker until a gang of drug addicts killed his wife and raped his daughter. When the police proved helpless, Benjamin tracked and killed them one by one. Now he is in Chicago, and the cycle of violence is about to begin anew. On his first night in the city, he stumbles out of a bar in a bad part of town, pretending to be drunk. When two thugs set upon him, he kills them both and escapes before the police arrive. They will not be the last of Chicago's criminal class to suffer his wrath. Written by Garfield as "penance" for the success of the grisly film adaptation of Death Wish, this sequel shows that when a decent man relies on violence to settle scores, murder becomes addictive
