"Teaching Children Gymnastics, Second Edition, shows teachers how to use an innovative and individualized approach to teaching gymnastics skills and how to link those skills into sequences. It has been expanded to present 30 child-tested examples of gymnastics activities (called learning experiences) that are ideal for children in kindergarten through grade 6. The learning experiences are divided into three skill themes: traveling, statics, and rotation." "The appendix contains ready-to-copy forms - including a gymnastics report card, task cards, a student certification form, and handouts for sequencing skills and creating routines - that you can use as is or customize to your own needs. An annotated suggested readings list provides you with a ready resource for expanding your understanding and skills related to developmentally appropriate gymnastics."--Jacket

Action-oriented learning activities are focused on in this book which attempts to outline an approach for stimulating and motivating children to learn through movement. The book is divided into five parts, each dealing with an aspect of the elementary school curriculum. Part one is concerned with the language arts and is divided into three chapters relating how listening and speaking, reading and writing, and nonverbal communication can be taught through physical activities. Part two presents the concepts of mathematics, and the lessons that have been developed are the whole numbers and the metric system; mathematical sentences, sets, and field properties; and quantitative ideas, measuring and graphing, and geometry. Part three discusses the teaching of science and covers stability, levers, Newton's laws of motion, factors affecting the human body and its movement, sound, and biological and earth sciences. Social studies concepts including living and working together, our home the earth, our country's heritage, and regional studies are presented in part four. Part five concerns the related arts concepts, and covers activities designed to teach the concepts of music, with activities exploring dynamic, tempo, pitch, mood, shape, phrasing, and rhythmic structure, and concepts of art and movement including line, form, shape, space, color, and design and composition.
