The transuranium people : the inside story by

15 editions published between 2000 and 2001 in English and held by 1,800 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
In this highly interesting book, three pioneering investigators provide an account of the discovery and investigation of the nuclear and chemical properties of the twenty presently known transuranium elements. The neutron irradiation of uranium led to the discovery of nuclear fission in 1938 and then to the first transuranium element, neptunium (atomic number 93), in 1940. Plutonium (94) quickly followed and the next nine elements completed the actinide series by 1961. Investigation of the chemical properties of the actinides was followed more recently by chemical studies of the first three tr

25 editions published between 1981 and 2020 in English and held by 1,083 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Glenn Seaborg, the chairman of the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission during the Kennedy administration, presents a detailed history of what seems the innocent days of nuclear arms control. He throws light on the actions of President Kennedy and the personality of Khrushchev, who is portrayed as a skillful rhetorician deeply concerned with slowing the arms race. According to the author Senate ratification of the limited test ban treaty in 1963 was only a partial victory, since he had hoped for a comprehensive ban on nuclear testing. Seaborg concludes with a plea for a ban under the terms of which neither side would be able to conduct any tests

During his distinguished career spanning more than 50 years, Nobel laureate (Chemistry) Glenn T. Seaborg published over 500 works. This volume puts together about 100 of his selected papers. The papers are divided into five categories. Category I consists of papers which detail the discovery of 10 transuranium elements and numerous heavy isotopes of special importance. Category II papers describe the discovery of a number of isotopes which became the workhorses of nuclear medicine or found other applications. Papers in Category III describe how the chemical properties of transuranium elements were originally determined, how chemistry is applied in nuclear sciences, and other chemical investigations, including early work done with the great chemist G.N. Lewis. Papers in Category IV cover radioactive decay chains and nuclear systematics. Lastly, papers in Category V illustrate how the powerful methods of chemistry are used to explain nuclear reactions in low, intermediate and high energy nuclear physics

The Atomic Energy Commission under Nixon : adjusting to troubled times by
Glenn T Seaborg(
Book
)
9 editions published between 1993 and 2016 in English and held by 287 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
In this revealing book, Nobel Laureate Glenn T. Seaborg tells what it was like to be chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission during the Nixon presidency. As in his two other highly-praised historical books (Kennedy, Khrushchev, and the Test Ban and Stemming the Tide: Arms Control in the Johnson Years), Dr. Seaborg draws extensively from his meticulously kept diary, enabling the reader to be a fly on the wall during meetings with Nixon, Henry Kissinger, and other key policy makers. During the Nixon period, the debate over how to deal with the Soviets on nuclear issues and arms control remained central. On the domestic scene, efforts to promote and regulate the growth of a nuclear power industry were complicated by a rising tide of environmental protest. Dr. Seaborg described how the Atomic Energy Commission, shorn of much of the political immunity of its early years, sought to maintain its programs and ultimately its very existence, while besieged by competing pressures from the White House, other government agencies, antinuclear activists, industry, state governments, and Congress. The Atomic Energy Commission Under Nixon provides valuable information and insights for those interested in nuclear matters, in the governing style and personality of Richard Nixon, and in how the U.S. government functions and fails to function

The Chemistry of the actinide elements by
Joseph J Katz(
Book
)
9 editions published in 1986 in English and held by 245 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
The first edition of this work appeared almost thirty years ago, when, as we can see in retrospect, the study of the actinide elements was in its first bloom. Although the broad features of the chemistry of the actinide elements were by then quite weil delineated, the treatment of the subject in the first edition was of necessity largely descriptive in nature. A detailed understanding of the chemical consequences of the characteristic presence of 5f electrons in most of the members of the actinide series was still for the future, and many of the systematic features of the actinide elements were only dimly apprehended. In the past thirty years all this has changed. The application of new spectroscopic techniques, which came into general use during this period, and new theoretical insights, which came from a better understanding of chemical bonding, inorganic chemistry, and solid state phenomena, were among the important factors that led to a great expansion and maturation in actinide element research and a large number of new and important findings. The first edition consisted of a serial description of the individual actinide elements, with a single chapter devoted to the six heaviest elements (lawrencium, the heaviest actinide, was yet to be discovered). Less than 15% of the text was devoted to a consideration of the systematics of the actinide elements

9 editions published in 1996 in English and held by 171 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
In A Scientist Speaks Out - A Personal Perspective on Science, Society, and Change, Nobel Laureate (Chemistry, 1951) Glenn T. Seaborg shares some of his thoughts and reflections on his broad interests, from the formulation of national science policy to the promise of youth. During a distinguished career in science and public service that spanned more than 50 years, he published over 500 works and maintained a public speaking schedule that included about 700 speeches on a wide variety of topics. This volume is a collection of nearly forty of his more popular speeches and articles, directed at a mostly non-scientific and non-technical audience. Since this volume is a compendium of reprints, readers will be able to share some of Seaborg's thoughts, as he originally penned them
