Graphs and their uses by Øystein Ore( )

84 editions published between 1963 and 2014 in 8 languages and held by 3,602 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In 1963 Oystein Ore wrote this classic volume, which was published in the New Mathematical Library Series. This elegant book has provided students and teachers with an excellent introduction to the field of graph theory for close to thirty years. Robin Wilson's revision adds strength to the book by updating the terminology and notation, bringing them in line with contemporary usage. Wilson has added new material on interval graphs, the traveling salesman problem, bracing frameworks, shortest route problems, and coloring maps on surfaces. Most of the diagrams in the book have been redrawn

Number theory and its history by Øystein Ore( Book )

43 editions published between 1948 and 2012 in English and held by 1,614 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This book, written by a prominent mathematician and Sterling Professor of Mathematics at Yale, differs from most books on number theory in two important ways: first, it presents the principal ideas and methods of number theory within a historical and cultural framework, making the subject more tangible and easily grasped. Second, the material requires substantially less mathematical background than many comparable texts. Technical complications and mathematical requirements have been kept to a minimum in order to make the book as accessible as possible to readers with limited mathematical knowledge. For the majority of the book, a basic knowledge of algebra will suffice. In developing the importance and meaning of number theory in the history of mathematics, Professor Ore documents the contributions of a host of history's greatest mathematicians: Diophantos, Euclid, Fibonacci, Euler, Fermat, Mersenne, Gauss, and many more, showing how these thinkers evolved the major outlines of number theory. Topics covered include counting and recording of numbers, the properties of numbers, prime numbers, the Aliquot parts, indeterminate problems, theory of linear indeterminate problems, Diophantine problems, congruences, analysis of congruences. Wilson's Theorem, Euler's theorem, theory of decimal expansions, the converse of Fermat's theorem, and the classical construction problems. Based on a course the author gave for a number of years at Yale, this book covers the essentials of number theory with a clarity and avoidance of abstruse mathematics that make it an ideal resource for undergraduates or for amateur mathematicians (who have historically contributed much to number theory). It has even been recommended for self-study by gifted high school students. -- from back cover
Cardano, the gambling scholar by Øystein Ore( Book )

33 editions published between 1953 and 2017 in English and Undetermined and held by 1,224 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Cardano, next to Vesalius the greatest physician of his day, was also a devoted and skilled gambler who played for personal pleasure and profit. His mathematical genius enabled him to devise simple rules of probability for his own benefit and for his gambling contemporaries. These he collected in his Book on Games of Chance and embellished them with essays on the tricks of cheats and kibitzers, as well as on psychological rules of play. In this biography of a stormy Renaissance personality, Cardano's gambling studies are deciphered for the first time, and a translation of the Book on Games of Chance is appended. Originally published in 1953. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. These editions preserve the original texts of these important books while presenting them in durable paperback and hardcover editions. The goal of the Princeton Legacy Library is to vastly increase access to the rich scholarly heritage found in the thousands of books published by Princeton University Press since its founding in 1905

Theory of graphs by Øystein Ore( Book )

61 editions published between 1962 and 1995 in 4 languages and held by 946 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The present book has grown out of a series of courses on graph theory given from time to time at Yale University. A first set of lectures on binary relations and graphs was presented before the American Mathematical Society in Chicago, 1942. In this volume the emphasis is on basic concepts, a systematic terminology, proofs, and problems
