Hopalong Cassidy could fan a gun every bit as well as Billy the Kid. Six rounds in three seconds was his slowest time, and not a soul in the grand state of Texas could beat him. Until he met Slim Travennes, head of the Sandy Creek Vigilante Committee. Slim was snake-fast. No man could go up against him and live. No man. Hoppy could stand or die. He had no other choice. None at all

But why does he show himself only on Friday nights -- and only to a Mexican? Hopalong Cassidy suspects there's a devious and practical reason. Then there's the day Hopalong rides into Rawhide and learns about its self-appointed ruler who is thought of as an affliction just waiting to be rubbed out. Johnny Nelson thought life on the Bar-20 was the best. Even after most of his friends had moved to the Tin Cup in Montana, he'd stayed on the Bar-20 in Texas. When farmers, sheep, barbed wire, and railroad towns made life unbearable, Johnny moved north to join his friends on the Tin Cup. But it seemed his friends were suffering from matrimony disease and were no longer available for Johnny's idea of a good time. Johnny figured he'd have to get married too if he was going to fit in and that wasn't happening. So he left to find greater adventure. Riding into Hastings, he's mistaken for a man named Logan and decides to head out to the CL ranch to find Logan and maybe land a job. Logan takes an instant liking to Nelson, especially after learning he is from the Bar-20. Logan hires Nelson and soon the two are plotting to catch the rustlers who have been stealing CL cattle

Fun-loving cowboy Johnny Nelson had left Tin Cup in search of adventure after his friends from the Bar-20 had married. He figured women were trouble. Once they got ahold of a guy, his freedom was gone and he couldn't have any more fun. He aimed to stay away from them. The town of Gunsight seemed like a good place to stay for a while. He could drink, gamble, spend time with the men, and there were no women around. Well, there was one -- Peggy Arnold. She lived out on a ranch with her father and little brother, Charley, but she wasn't in town and she didn't trust cowboys. So he should be able to keep his distance. Things changed when Johnny was out riding and heard a shot. Rushing to the spot, he found Charley Arnold sobbing over his dead horse that had been shot when Charley was riding to get the doctor for his father. That was going too far! Any no good skunk that would shoot a good horse like that needs to be taught a lesson. So Johnny decided to come to the Arnolds' aid -- even if it meant getting near Peggy. He had some ideas that should keep them from losing their ranch
