The cultural contradictions of capitalism by Daniel Bell( Book )

96 editions published between 1975 and 2015 in 6 languages and held by 2,654 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Since its original publication in 1976, The Cultural Contradictions of Capitalism has been hailed as an intellectual tour de force that redefines how we think about the relationship among econmomics, culture, and social change. Daniel Bell, the author of such other modern classics as The End of Ideology and The Coming of Post-Industrial Society, argues that the unbounded drive of modern capitalism undermines the moral foundations of the original Protestant ethic that ushered in capitalism itself. In a major new afterword, Bell offers a bracing perspective on contemporary Western society, from the end of the Cold War to the rise and fall of postmodernism, revealing the crucial cultural fault lines we face as the twenty-first century approaches."--BOOK JACKET
The coming of post-industrial society; a venture in social forecasting by Daniel Bell( Book )

80 editions published between 1973 and 2010 in English and Spanish and held by 2,455 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Bell's prophetic 1976 forecast of the Information Age and how it would radically alter the social structure. With a new introduction by Bell. In 1976, when Daniel Bell first published The Coming of Post-Industrial Society, he predicted a vastly different world-one that would rely upon an economics of information, as opposed to the economics of goods that had existed up to then. Bell argued that the new society would not displace the old one but rather overlay it in profound ways, much as industrialization continues to coexist with the agrarian sectors of our society. In Bell's prescient vision, the post-industrial society would include the birth and growth of a knowledge class, a change from goods to services, and changes in the role of women. All of these would be based upon an increasing dependence on science as a means of innovation; as a means of technical and social change. The Coming of Post-Industrial Society remains an important book for a whole new generation of politicians, economists, intellectuals, and students. --Publisher

"About this title: In 1965, the American Academy of Arts and Sciences initiated the Commission on the Year 2000, the forerunner of what became the field of futurism. The Commission did not believe that one could "predict" the future, but sought instead to identify structural changes in society that would have long-term social impacts. And since the Commission believed that choices were possible, it sought to chart "alternative futures" on critical issues that society would face. The results of the Commission's work appeared in 1967 in a special issue of "Dædalus," the journal of the Academy. The volume consisted of "working papers," prepared by the Chairman of the Commission, Daniel Bell, twenty-three memoranda written by such scholars as Daniel P. Moynihan, Erik Erikson, Ernst Mayr, David Riesman, James Q. Wilson, and Samuel P. Huntington, and an edited transcript of the vigorous discussions provoked by the documents."--from desc. of newer ed. ://

The radical right by Daniel Bell( Book )

26 editions published between 1963 and 2017 in English and held by 610 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Who are the Radical Right and why do extreme rightest movements keep recurring in mid-twentieth century America? These are the themes explored in "The Radical Right" by a group of distinguished American historians, sociologists, and political scientists. They find that the roots of the radical right go back to the fundamentalist attacks on science and the patriotic vigilantism of the 1920s, that its members are persons who do not understand social change and seek to hold fast to certitudes that no longer exist, that the extreme right's basic fear is not Communism, but modernity - which is why it seeks to equate liberalism with Communism, and that the social sources of right-wing support are no longer to be found in the bold economic interest group conflicts which have characterized different periods in American life, but in the idea of status concerns and status politics which shapes political attitudes today. Six of the fourteen essays first appeared in The New American Right in 1955. For this volume each of the six authors has added a new chapter applying his analytical scheme to the politics of the 1960s. In addition, there is a study of the John Birch Society by Alan F. Westin and a comparative analysis of the political climates in Britain and the United States by Herbert H. Hyman
