Prohibition : thirteen years that changed America by Edward Behr( Book )

29 editions published between 1996 and 2013 in English and Undetermined and held by 1,973 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

On the stroke of midnight on January 16, 1920, America went dry. For the next thirteen years the 18th Amendment to the Constitution would specifically deny every citizen the right to buy or sell alcoholic drink. Those thirteen years were to change America forever: instead of regulating social behavior and eliminating the scourge of "the Devil's brew," Prohibition incited Americans to bend or break the law by virtually any means possible. In these pages, Edward Behr traces the rise of the Temperance movement from Colonial times onward. Indeed, pioneer America was a free-wheeling, hard-drinking country. Whiskey was so plentiful it was often used for legal - and illegal - tender. Throughout the latter half of the nineteenth century and into the early years of the twentieth, various crusading forces, some well-meaning, some hypocritical, were increasingly demanding an end to intemperance and the abolition of all alcoholic beverages. Between 1920 and 1933, they succeeded

Kiss the hand you cannot bite : the rise and fall of the Ceauşescus by Edward Behr( Book )

23 editions published between 1991 and 1992 in English and French and held by 895 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Behr's probing analysis of the historical roots of the Ceausescu dictatorship in Romania goes a long way toward explaining the pathological behavior characterizing the rule of t̀̀he communist Dracula'' and why his regime endured. À̀ man like me, '' Nicolae Ceausescu boasted, c̀̀omes along only once every five hundred years.'' Behr (Hirohito) makes clear what manner of man Ceausescu was, how he ruled his country and the important role his wife, Elena, played in the regime. The picture that comes into focus is that of an evil-minded, paranoid and petty couple, at once canny and stupid, who relied on a huge state security apparatus, the Securitate, to spread fear among their extraordinarily submissive subjects. The book includes a full account of the popular uprising in December 1989 and the arrest, trial and execution of the Ceausescus. Behr notes that the bulk of the officers and officials of the Securitate remain in place; thus the dead ''Dracula'' continues to cast his shadow over the land. This is a rare close look at one of the most grotesque of the Communist personality cults.--

The good Frenchman : the true story of the life and times of Maurice Chevalier by Edward Behr( Book )

5 editions published in 1993 in English and held by 301 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Much more than merely a chronicle of a show-business giant, The Good Frenchman tells the story of a country whose personality, tragedies, and triumphs seem to parallel the life and career of one of its most famous sons. This is not just the history of a song-and-dance man but the history of French music-hall tradition. It is not merely the story of a movie star but a chronicle of the early days of Hollywood, with all its bombast and extravagance and cruelty. It is not only the tale of one man who lived through two wars, political persecution, and extraordinary social upheaval; it is a social and political study, definitively portraying the scope and breadth of life in twentieth-century France. Edward Behr's The Good Frenchman is entertainment of the top order as well as a work of historical and psychological distinction
