Cy Twombly : die Skulptur = Cy Twombly : the sculpture by Katharina Schmidt( Book )

11 editions published in 2000 in German and English and held by 354 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

One of the essential artists of our time, Cy Twombly is known primarily for his paintings, but his lesser-known sculpture oeuvre is an important dimension of his work as an artist. This large-format publication reveals his extensive body of sculptural work. Inspired by Kurt Schwitters, Giacometti and Surrealist object art, some of his early assemblages date back to the 1950s. These pieces are composed of everyday found objects, which Twombly arranged in the vein of magical or fetishistic objects. Later he began to cover them with a uniform coat of white paint. Thus placed in a new formal context, the original meaning of the individual pieces is blurred, connecting them with a wide range of cultural references. Literature and music, landscape and plantlife are all evoked. Twombly's sculptures are always white, exuding both an odd, ethereal quality and an aura of timeless poetry. -- Amazon.com
Canto d'amore : classicism in modern art and music, 1914-1935 by Öffentliche Kunstsammlung Basel( Book )

22 editions published in 1996 in 3 languages and held by 329 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The classicism of the 1920s has usually been understood as a counter-modernist, reactionary tendency, summed up in Jean Cocteau's phrase, 'return to order' (Rappel a l'ordre). But the exhibition and catalogue Canto d'Amore, a title taken from De Chirico's key 'metaphysical' painting of 1914, demonstrates that this classicism should be more correctly understood as an alternative modernism, a 'modernist classicism'. The changes of direction undertaken by artists and
Ferdinand Hodler : a symbolist vision by Ferdinand Hodler( Book )

19 editions published in 2008 in English and German and held by 291 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Swiss painter Ferdinand Hodler (1853-1918) is one of Europe's most influential artistic personalities, whose work bridged the styles of Realism, Symbolism, and the modern period. Despite initial praise, his extensive oeuvre has not always been an object of admiration; its diversity and originality, however, deserve international re-evaluation. Hodler's Symbolist vision of a large, harmonious union of man and nature is expressed both in unique and monumental figurative compositions, and in stylized landscapes of sheer mountain peaks and glinting lakes. Twenty-five years since the last retrospective, this fresh and extensive assessment of Hodler's partings invites the viewer to explore his work anew; on the one hand it represents a unique view of turn-of-the-century art and Symbolism, on the other it demonstrates a powerful and genuine interest in the depiction of man."--Jacket
Anselm Kiefer : the seven heavenly palaces, 1973-2001 by Anselm Kiefer( Book )

7 editions published in 2001 in English and held by 284 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The Austrian writer Christoph Ransmayr has contributed an inspired literary investigation of the work and life of this artist living near the French village of Barjac. He takes us through La Ribaute, the artist's studio compound, past glass houses and leaden installations, through poppy fields and dense scrub, through underground passages and containers filled with pictures and sculptures. Meanwhile, the photographer Thomas Flechtner has captured fleeting visual impressions of this creative terrain. Markus Bruderlin, Mark Rosenthal and Katharina Schmidt, each with a deep knowledge of Anselm Kiefer's work, have provided illuminating introductions to the individual chapters that go to make up this detailed compendium which, focusing on four major areas of Anselm Kiefer's work, offers the reader an insight into the specific emblematics used by this artist as well as into the process of his pictorial production and the many-faceted nature of his artistic output."--Jacket
