Witches, midwives, and nurses : a history of women healers by Barbara Ehrenreich( Book )

61 editions published between 1970 and 2016 in English and held by 2,386 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

First published by the Feminist Press in 1973, Witches, Midwives & Nurses is an essential book about the corruption of the medical establishment and its historic roots in the demonizing of women healers. With insight and originality, the authors have woven together stories about the witch hunts of the Middle Ages, the emergence of the Popular Health Movement, and an analysis of the contemporary state of medicine in relation to women's rights. In a new introduction written for this special edition, Ehrenreich and English discuss how this crucial text emerged, how much has changed, and how "for all our gains, we clearly have our work cut out for us."--Back cover

Complaints and disorders : the sexual politics of sickness by Barbara Ehrenreich( Book )

40 editions published between 1973 and 2018 in English and French and held by 1,181 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In this exciting sequel to their underground bestseller, Witches, Midwives, and Nurses, Barbara Ehrenreich and Deirdre English document the tradition of American sexism in medicine before and after the turn of the century. Citing vivid examples, including numerous "treatments" and "rest cures" perpetrated on women through the decades, the authors analyze the biomedical rationale used to justify the wholesale sex discrimination throughout our culture-in education, in jobs, and in public life. Ever since Hippocrates, male medics have treated women as the "weaker" sex. By the late 19th century, when the authority of religious documents had waned, the ultimate rationale for sex discrimination became solely biomedical. In this intriguing pamphlet, the authors raise the diffuclt question: "How sick-or well-are women today?" They assert that feminists today want more than "more": "We want a new style, and we want a new substance of medical practice as it relates to women."

Carnival strippers by Susan Meiselas( Recording )

12 editions published between 2003 and 2004 in English and held by 163 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

From 1972 to 1975, Susan Meiselas spent her summers photographing and interviewing women who performed striptease for smalltown carnivals in New England, Pennsylvania and South Carolina. As she followed the girl shows from town to town, she portrayed the dancers on stage and off, photographing their public performances as well as their private lives. She also taped interviews with the dancers, their boyfriends, the show managers and paying customers. Meiselas' frank description of the lives of these women brought a hidden world to public attention. Produced during the early years of the women's movement, "Carnival Strippers" reflects the struggle for identity and self-esteem that characterized a complex era of change. This revised edition contains a new selection of Meiselas' black-and-white photographs together with the original interview excerpts. Additionally, an audio CD featuring a collage of participants' voices and a 1977 interview with the photographer are included. Essays by Sylvia Wolf and Deirdre English reflect on the importance of this body of work within the history of photography and the history of feminism

2 editions published between 1978 and 2015 in French and held by 19 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
