Willem de Kooning : paintings by Marla Prather( Book )

26 editions published in 1994 in English and Undetermined and held by 1,304 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

One of America's greatest painters, Willem de Kooning is a masterful colourist whose huge canvases are charged with enormous energy. The publication of this beautiful book, which presents eighty of de Kooning's finest paintings and painted works on paper from the early 1940s to the 1980s, coincides with the artist's ninetieth birthday in the spring of 1994. Organized thematically and chronologically, the book focuses on de Kooning's most noteworthy and original painted achievements: portraits from the early 1940s; black-and-white abstractions from 1945 to 1949 that established de Kooning as a leader of the abstract expressionist movement; monumental cityscape paintings from 1949 and 1950; key selections from the notorious Woman series of 1945 to 1954; highway and pastoral landscape abstractions from 1954 to 1960; lush figures in landscapes from 1966 to 1973; landscapes from the 1970s; and later expressive and calligraphic "tableaux." Drawing on new archival sources, essays by David Sylvester, Richard Shiff, and Marla Prather reassess de Kooning's critical status, examine his complex and evocative painting techniques, place him in the context of other artists and art movements of his era, and discuss the fundamental impact of his art on subsequent generations. The book serves as the catalogue for a major retrospective of de Kooning's work that will be on exhibit at the National Gallery of Art in Washington from 8 May 1994 to 5 September 1994, the Metropolitan Museum in New York from 6 October 1994 to 8 January 1995, and the Tate Gallery in London from 15 February 1995 to 7 May 1995

"The purpose of this book, written in conjunction with the Magritte catalogue raisonné, is to look at the artist and his art in ways which lie outside the scope of that publication ... It discusses the long-term development of images and ideas' and it ventures opinions about events and patterns in the artist's life"--Page [7]
Looking at Giacometti by David Sylvester( Book )

29 editions published between 1990 and 1999 in 3 languages and held by 871 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"Alberto Giacometti (1901-1966) was one of the century's greatest sculptors and painters. Famous in the 1930s for his surrealist works, he suddenly isolated himself in the mid-1940s and began obsessively to make and remake sculptures and paintings (sometimes entirely demolishing and rebuilding a sculpture several times in a day), wrestling with complex problems of perception and representation. By the mid-1950s he had established a reputation as one of the most startlingly original artists of the twentieth century." "Written over a period of forty years - from David Sylvester's first visits to Giacometti's studio in the late 1940s to the author's prolonged sitting for Giacometti's portrait of him in 1960 to the meditations on the artist's completed oeuvre after his death - Looking at Giacometti is a profound response to Giacometti's art. A compelling mixture of biography and criticism, it casts a bright light on twentieth-century art and thought. An interview with Giacometti - published here in its entirety for the first time - rounds out this original and valuable book."--Jacket
Interviews with American artists by David Sylvester( Book )

17 editions published between 2001 and 2002 in English and Undetermined and held by 716 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

David Sylvester was one of the world's finest writers on modern art. From the decades after 1945, he proved himself to be a true and dedicated champion of new painting and sculpture. With his expertise, sympathy, and provocative style, Sylvester was unique in his ability to talk freely with influential artists. This seminal book includes 21 interviews -- recorded over the past forty years -- with leading American artists. Together they chronicle and illuminate all the great developments in American art of the twentieth century. Conversations from the 1960s vividly conjure up the New York art scene immediately after the war, when the newly arrived Europeans met the Americans, their different traditions colliding and fusing as they began to work together. Others, like those with Carl Andre, Cy Twombly, Alex Katz, and Jeff Koons, speak straight from today. No one but Sylvester could have produced this intricate collage, this chorus of voices that blend to create one of the most revealing and unusual histories of American art in the twentieth century

Drawing on his unparalleled personal knowledge of Bacon's inspirations and intentions, he first offers a critical overview of the work's development from 1933 to the early 1990s, and then addresses its crucial aspects. He also reproduces previously unpublished extracts from his celebrated conversations with Bacon in which the artist speaks about himself, modern painters and the art of the past. David Sylvester's writings about many of the century's major artists are exhibited here in a brilliant and witty retrospective that reveals the authors' personal involvement with painting and sculpture over a fifty-year period. Like modern art itself, the essays isolate experience, while also opening a window into the minds and methods of contemporary masters. David Sylvester, as curator and critic, wrote about many of the works as the artists were creating them, enabling us to observe the development of a perspective on modern art that is the result of an intense professional and personal involvement. His sustained investigations into the artists' social and intellectual lives offer piercing insights into the works and the artists themselves
