Prenatal-postnatal health needs and medical care of children, United States by Jean Roberts( Book )

3 editions published in 1973 in English and held by 96 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The report of the Health Examination Survey program contained national estimates of infant health needs and the extent of prenatal and postnatal medical care received by 7,119 normal and handicapped children who were 6 to 11 years of age in 1963 through 1965. Children were chosen to be representative of American noninstitutionalized children with respect to age, sex, race, and region as well as other demographic and socioeconomic variables. Medical history data were obtained from a questionnaire completed by the parent. Principal findings included the following: more than 97% of mothers had some medical care during pregnancy; 3% of the children weighed less than 5 pounds at birth while 1% weighed more than 10 pounds; mothers of physically underdeveloped infants reported more medical problems during pregnancy; 8% (equally distributed between boys and girls) of the children had birth defects; 92% of the children were born in a hospital; 14% of the children had health problems during infancy of which 98% had the services of a physician; one third of the children were breast fed; and children in good health at the time of the survey were only slightly more likely to have been free of health problems during infancy. Color vision deficiencies in youths 12-17 years of age, United States by David Slaby( Book )

3 editions published in 1974 in English and held by 94 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The prevalence of color vision deficiencies among youths 12 to 17 years of age in the United States was evaluated during a 1966-1970 survey of 6,768 youths selected as representative of noninstitutionalized adolescents with respect to age, sex, race, geographic region, income, population size of place of residence, and rate of population change in the place of residence from 1950 to 1960. Findings indicated that approximately 4% of adolescents have color vision deficiencies with boys about 12 times more likely to have this defect than girls. No significant differences were found in the prevalence rates for white and Negro boys except in the South. Red-green color vision deficiencies were substantially more prevalent than blue-yellow defects, which were found only in conjunction with the red-green defect. Age was not related to the prevalence of color vision deficiencies. No statistically significant regional differences in the prevalence of red-green deficiencies were found, although a significant racial difference was observed in the South (three times as many white as Negro boys had red-green deficiencies). Differences in the prevalence rates across income levels were negligible. (Approximately half the document consists of detailed tables of the survey's findings.) (Author/DB)

Visual Acuity of Youths 12-17 Years, United States. Vital and Health Statistics, Series 11, No. 127 by Jean Roberts( Book )

1 edition published in 1973 in English and held by 1 WorldCat member library worldwide

Presented are the findings of a national health examination survey of uncorrected and corrected monocular and binocular visual acuity of 7,514 noninstitutionalized youth 12 to 17 years of age analyzed with respect to age, sex, race, geographic region, size of place of residence, and annual family income. Among findings reported are that 70 0/0 of the youths had at least normal unaided binocular distance acuity, that four percent of the sample were unable to read at the 20/200 level unaided, that boys had better binocular distance acuity than girls, the 34 0/0 of the sample were reported to wear glasses or contact lenses, that Negro adolescents had better unaided visual acuity than white adolescents, that the prevalence of normal unaided acuity was greatest in the South, and that youths from families with income of less than $3,000 per year had better unaided visual than youths from families with incomes of $5,000 or more. Detailed tables supporting the findings are given. (Db)
