Zakhor, Jewish history and Jewish memory by Yosef Hayim Yerushalmi( )

58 editions published between 1982 and 2014 in 6 languages and held by 1,626 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Discusses the nature of Jewish historical memory which traditionally concentrated on the religious meaning of history rather than on the events themselves. Medieval Jewish historians focused either on the ancient past or on recent persecutions, tending to identify them with biblical patterns of oppression. For example, the Hebrew chronicles of the Crusader massacres show awareness of a deterioration in Christian-Jewish relations, using the "binding of Isaac" as a pattern for Jewish martyrdom. Although the chronicles were forgotten, the memory of the persecutions was preserved in halakhic and liturgical works. The expulsion from Spain in 1492 stimulated a minor resurgence in Jewish historiography. However, the kabbalistic myth proved more influential than history. Modern Jewish historiography is based on the secular concept of historical science and, especially since the Holocaust, cannot take the place of group memory
Freud's Moses : Judaism terminable and interminable by Yosef Hayim Yerushalmi( Book )

30 editions published between 1991 and 2014 in 7 languages and held by 948 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Contends that Freud's "Moses and Monotheism" is a psychoanalytic history of the Jews and Judaism - his attempt to define the meaning of Jewishness under the threat of Nazism. Argues that, for Freud, Christianity, antisemitism, and Gentiles overlapped. While Freud felt a sense of otherness vis-a-vis non-Jews, he courted Gentiles professionally in an ultimately unsuccessful attempt to prevent psychoanalysis from being attacked as a "Jewish science." Surveys the antisemitic attitudes of some of Freud's followers. Contends that Freud viewed antisemitism as endemic to Christianity, especially because of its unconscious component

27 editions published between 1966 and 1981 in English and held by 509 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

Traces the life of Cardoso, a Portuguese Converso physician and writer who lived for many years in Madrid. Ch. 1 (pp. 1-50), "Marranos in the Seventeenth Century", describes the status of Conversos in Spain, Portugal, and other countries, referring to discrimination and persecution by means of the "limpieza de sangre" statutes and to the introduction of the Inquisition in Spain (1478) and Portugal (1536). Ch. 3 relates to the "El Cristo de la Paciencia" case in which Conversos were accused of Judaizing and of beating an image of Christ on the cross, which ended with the execution of six Conversos in Madrid in 1632. 48 years later, Cardoso, after returning to Judaism in Italy, gave his own account of these events. Also describes Cardoso's later polemics with Christianity and his "Las excelencias de los Hebreos", which contains a reply to antisemitic calumnies and stereotypes

Diener von Königen und nicht Diener von Dienern : einige Aspekte der politischen Geschichte der Juden by Yosef Hayim Yerushalmi( Book )

14 editions published in 1995 in German and held by 117 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

A lecture delivered at the Carl Friedrich von Siemens Stiftung on 19 October 1993. States that throughout the ages - in Alexandria and elsewhere in the Roman Empire, in medieval and modern Europe - Jews looked to the sovereigns - emperors, kings, popes, and eventually the modern state - to protect them from the antisemitism of local rulers and the mob. In general, their appeals were answered, although sometimes the protection came too late. While sovereigns might issue anti-Jewish edicts, these never went beyond at most expulsion or an attempt at forced conversion; physical extermination was unthinkable. Thus the Jews were unprepared for the state-perpetrated Holocaust; their leaders attempted to negotiate with the Nazis as they had with rulers throughout history, but this time their expectations misled them
