The letters of Jean Rhys by Jean Rhys( Book )

33 editions published between 1984 and 2004 in 3 languages and held by 1,167 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"In her will, Jean Rhys expressed a wish that no biography of her should be written unless authorized during her lifetime. Following her death, her literary executor was approached frequently with requests for permission to write "an official life". Finally he decided that, by compiling a volume of letters, authentic biographical information would be provided. But as the collection grew, the biographical aspect took on a secondary importance as the self-portrait began to reveal the turbulent process of literary creation. The final result is a portrait spanning the years 1931 (taking up the story roughly where it was left in "Smile Please") to 1966, when the long struggle to finish "Wide Sargasso Sea" was over."--Provided by

The complete fiction by Francis Wyndham( Book )

5 editions published in 2009 in English and held by 97 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The earliest stories here, gathered under the title Out of the War, are brilliant vignettes of deprivation and desire written during World War II. The later Mrs Henderson and Other Stories, by contrast, offers scrupulously observed tragicomic pictures of the vagaries of upper-class English family life. Finally, in the Whitbread Prize-winning short novel The Other Garden, a shy teenage boy living in the country strikes up an unlikely friendship with Kay, the thirty-something daughter of neighbors, sister to a famous actor, and black sheep of her family. Kay, with her whims and crazes and boyfriends, is unable to hold her own against her family's disapproval, and the narrator watches with helpless fascination as her small but very real tragedy is played out against the background of the Second World War."--Jacket

Assignments by Antony Armstrong-Jones Snowdon( Book )

1 edition published in 1972 in German and held by 14 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The career of a professional photographer is a succession of challenges. lf he is commissioned to photograph a famous personality, he must find a way of revealing something new in the familiar face of the sitter and at the same time avoid any facile distortion. If he sets out to expose a social evil--the loneliness of old age, the plight of the physically handicapped or the mentally disturbed--he must do so without unduly intruding on the privacy of his anonymous subjects. And if he is asked to confront a spectacular landscape, he must somehow avoid the banality of the picture-postcard. This book is a record of such problems successfully solved. Its contents span nearly twenty years, ranging from the first assignments of Tony Armstrong-Jones, working in black and white as a photo-journalist, to the most recent of Snowdon's colour essays in Peru. It is a collection of contrasts: between people, celebrated or obscure; between places, exotic or humdrum; and between the different styles which the photographer chose in order to interpret the essence of his various themes. It can be enjoyed as the interesting record of an artist's development, and also as a fascinating anthology of vivid images--some slyly satirical, some unsentimentally compassionate, and some just beautiful in themselves."--Jacket
