In 1921, Bauhaus planned a series of five graphic portfolios, which were to feature a cross-section of European avant-garde graphic art from 1912-1923. The 1st portfolio was reserved for Bauhaus artists, the 2nd for French, the 3rd and 5th for German, and the 4th for Italian and Russian. Due to financial constraints the ambitious project could not be fully realized, and the 2nd portfolio of French artists was not issued, and the scope of the 4th portfolio was reduced.
