Life processes of plants by Arthur W Galston( Book )

14 editions published between 1994 and 1997 in 3 languages and held by 1,204 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

At first glance, plants appear to be extremely passive organisms, silent, immobile, and unprotected. But within their placid exteriors there occurs a continuous swirl of activity - a complex orchestration of processes that allow the plant to obtain food, endure drastic weather, fend off predators, anticipate the future, and carry out tasks more often associated with higher animals. Plants are organic chemists par excellence, capable of synthesizing complex molecules; and they are experts at survival, equipped to withstand and adapt to the many challenges of nature. In Life Processes of Plants, botanist Arthur Galston describes how plants live, react to crises, and change when necessary. It is an eloquent and exquisitely illustrated volume, vividly conveying the scientific research that brought these extraordinary natural skills to light. Galston explores the dynamic existence of plants at all levels - from the organism as a whole down to the interplay of its tissues, cells, and molecules. Readers will be intrigued by the plant's methods of storing energy from sunlight, by the internal clock that tells plants the time of day, by the chemical warfare used against predators and competitors, and by the hormonal and electro-chemical communications network that conveys information within the plant. In addition, readers will witness the plant's impressive powers of regeneration, wherein almost any single cell can be the starting point for a complete separate plant. Another chapter shows how this regenerative ability and cooperation with microbes are the keys to remarkable developments in the exciting field of agricultural biotechnology. Life Processes of Plants illuminates some often overlooked phenomena of the natural world. Readers will see plants in a whole new way - as fascinating examples of both the complexity and simplicity of life

Expanding horizons in bioethics by Arthur W Galston( )

15 editions published in 2005 in English and Undetermined and held by 672 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

What are the resources and needs, the strengths and the vulnerabilities of patients, of society, or of nature? How do we evaluate the societal potential of scientific discovery? It is fairly well assured that we are influencing the terms of existence of many inhabitants of this planet, from flora to fauna to humans. Moreover, history has shown that while technologies can be used neutrally, they can be (and have been) used to the great benefit - or the great detriment - of human life and the fate of the world as a whole. How various types of knowledge and technological ability will be deployed is up to us, individually and collectively. How such information and ability should be deployed, and for what reasons, are questions at the core of bioethical inquiry. These are the 'expanding horizons in bioethics' to which this volume refers. This volume is comprised of fourteen essays. It is a rare gathering of scholarly opinion, featuring well-known experts from a diversity of disciplines. The topics addressed are of immediate concern to the public. The essays ask questions about human nature, genetic technologies, reproductive rights, human subjects research, and environmental issues - all in provocative and challenging new ways. Yet the themes that emerge throughout the volume are of enduring interest to anyone concerned about the interactions of scientific development, ethics, and society. This volume is of interest to students and teachers of bioethics and related topics, as well as to professionals working in these disciplines

New dimensions in bioethics : science, ethics, and the formulation of public policy by Arthur W Galston( Book )

16 editions published between 2000 and 2001 in English and Italian and held by 287 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

In the last three decades, bioethics has matured into a field of study with several areas of concentration, including medical ethics, environmental ethics and more recently, genetic ethics. For reasons related to both the developmental history of the subject and to the poignancy of the problems presented, most textbooks and collections of essays have dealt with only a single area, medical ethics. In fact, to many not in the field, the word bioethics has become synonymous with medical ethics. The aim of this collection of essays, entitled New Dimensions in Bioethics: Science, Ethics and the Formation of Public Policy, is to enlarge this restrictive vision of the field as it is usually studied at universities. By combining essays relevant to medical ethics with companion essays on environmental ethics and genetic ethics, the book emphasizes similarities in the methods of analysis used in diverse bioethical problems, whether dealing with genes, with people or the environment. In this way, New Dimensions in Bioethics: Science, Ethics and the Formation of Public Policy, hopes to contribute to the intellectual unity of the subject and to suggest changes in the way bioethics can be taught and studied at both the graduate and undergraduate level

The Flowering Process covers the physiological processes involved in the conversion from the vegetative to the reproductive state in higher plants. This book is composed of ten chapters, and begins with a description of the biological framework of flowering. The succeeding chapters deal with the link between ecology and the flowering process and the low temperature promotion of flowering. These topics are followed by discussions on methods of experimentation with cocklebur and the preparation of plant for response to photo period. Other chapters describe the effect of light, pigment, and timin
Mineral salts absorption in plants by James F Sutcliffe( )

Next, the selection discusses the mechanisms of ion transport. Chapter 4 deals with the factors affecting salt absorption, while Chapter 5 talks about salt absorption and metabolisms. In the sixth chapter, the text covers the structural aspects of salt absorption in cells. The seventh chapter discusses the salts relations of
