Search for a method by
Jean-Paul Sartre(
Book
)
6 editions published between 1963 and 1969 in English and held by 1,199 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
-- Back cover

Sartre by
Hazel Estella Barnes(
Book
)
13 editions published between 1973 and 1974 in 3 languages and held by 999 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
Hazel E. Barnes, America's leading authority on Sartre, here examines his development as a philosopher, beginning with the crucial winter of 1940 when Sartre was a prisoner of war in Germany. As she traces the evolution of his thought, she demonstrates the consistency between the various phases of Sartre's work, explaining how what he has written fits in with his political activity. She interrelates his literature and philosophy, illustrating with well-chosen examples both the way in which the literature illuminates the philosophy (and vice versa) and the relation between Sartre's theory of literature and the literary works themselves. The result is a comprehensive and highly readable introduction to the thought of a complex man of unique intellect. Moreover, it reveals why Sartre for so long has seemed to speak "directly to the condition" of widely differing groups while at the same time providing a new approach to traditional problems in Western philosophy.--Adapted from book jacket

"This study in humanistic existentialism is highly informative as well as entertaining. It is a scholarly, detail analysis of the literary art, the philosophical ideas and the psychologies of Albert Camus, Jean-Paul Sartre and Simone de Beauvoir. It is also a competent effort to explain the positive implications for the theory of freedom and possibility which lie half buried under this literature of nothingness, alienation and absurdity."--[Back cover

The story I tell myself : a venture in existentialist autobiography by
Hazel Estella Barnes(
)
6 editions published between 1997 and 2008 in English and held by 11 WorldCat member libraries worldwide
The Story I Tell Myself is an engrossing account of one woman's psychological liberation from a false sense of what she wanted to be, and of the gradual development of a personal philosophy she was willing to live by. Before she finished college, Barnes had shed her religious beliefs, but she kept intact her inbred convictions that life was difficult, that she was accountable for what she made of her life, and that her actions should accord with her own values. She came of age in the era between Virginia Woolf and Betty Friedan, when women were beginning to break away from traditional patterns but primarily as exceptions and only within limits. Barnes recounts how she came to undertake the translation of Sartre and the subsequent battles with publishers and some hostile critics. Taking to heart Sartre's belief that an individual is both the product and the unique expression of his or her period, Barnes describes how she made Existentialism her own - introducing it in writing, in speaking, and in a television series
