The civil rights movement in America : essays by Charles W Eagles( Book )

1 edition published in 1986 in English and held by 1,007 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

"The Civil Rights Movement warrants continuing and extensive examination. The six papers in this collection, each supplemented by a follow-up assessment, contribute to a clearer perception of what caused and motivated the movement, of how it functioned, of the changes that occurred within it, and of its accomplishments and shortcomings. Its profound effect upon modern America has so greatly changed relations between the races that C. Vann Woodward has called it the "second revolution." In a limited space the eleven scholars range with a definitive view over a large subject. Their papers analyze and emphasize the Civil Rights Movement's important aspects: its origins and causes, its strategies and tactics for accomplishing black freedom, the creative tensions in its leadership, the politics of the movement in the key state of Mississippi, and the role of federal law and federal courts. In this collection a scholarly balance is achieved for each paper by a follow-up commentary from a significant authority. By deepening the understanding of the Civil Rights Movement, these essays underscore what has been gained through struggle, as well as acknowledging the goals that are yet to be attained."--

Moving up : ethnic succession in America : with a case history from the Philadelphia school system by Daniel Judah Elazar( Book )

2 editions published in 1976 in English and held by 115 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

To aid in understanding how the process of ethnic succession has worked in America, both a conceptual overview and an indepth analysis of a particular situation that occurred over the past four decades in the Philadelphia school system are presented. Resulting from this historical investigation are a series of highly useful guidelines. The first chapter examines the subtle and not so subtle ways in which ethnicity affects the lives of Americans, and addresses specific topics such as ethnic succession and the new pluralism, diversity, ethnicity and occupational choices, patterns of ethnic succession in America, the growth of ethnic power blocs, political changes, and other issues. The next chapter focuses on a case of ethnic succession: the entry and upward movement of blacks in teaching and administrative posts in the Philadelphia schools in the 60's and early 70's and their partial replacement of Jews and Italians with the assistance of white Protestant cosmopolitan leaders of the school system. This case study should be viewed against the backdrop of the social trends that are described throughout the document. Although it is not examined indepth, it is recognized that the ethnic composition of both the teaching staff and student body is of great significance in the educational process. (Author/AM)
