Current issues in computational linguistics : in honour of Don Walker by Donald E Walker( )

9 editions published in 1994 in English and held by 426 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

This collection of papers is dedicated to Don Walker, a kind, gentle soul, and a man of intelligence and vision whom we have been privileged to know and to work with. The technical content of these papers clearly reflects his guidance and direction; his understanding of the relevance of the theories from related disciplines such as linguistics, psychology, and philosophy; and his dream of the future availability of electronic documents and the potential of this as a resource for corpus-based analysis. This led to one of his most interdisciplinary roles as a primary mover in the push to standardize the acquisition and tagging of electronic text, an endeavour that brought together people from fields as distinct as publishing, the humanities and computer science. His widespread interests are mirrored in the rich and diverse collection of papers in this volume which portray many different approaches and many different styles. These papers co-exist in harmony here, united by the goal of paying tribute to Don as well as actualizing part of his dream. -- Publisher description
Automating the lexicon : research and practice in a multilingual environment by Donald E Walker( Book )

16 editions published between 1988 and 1995 in English and Italian and held by 305 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The 'Grosetto workshop' was an event which broke new ground. It brought together for the first time an international and interdisciplinary group of researchers concerned with computational lexicography. These papers, selected from the workshop, have provided a baseline and a reference point for further research on problems associated with the lexicon. The collection is not merely of historical interest: it addresses many issues that are still debated today and that guide current research and development

Interactive bibliographic search: the user/computer interface by Donald E., Ed Walker( Book )

20 editions published in 1971 in English and held by 205 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

On the 14th and 15th of January, 1971, a workshop on The User Interface for Interactive Search of Bibliographic Data Bases was held in Palo Alto. The participants were provided in advance with a challenge paper and with a number of papers prepared in response to that challenge. The Workshop sessions themselves were devoted exclusively to focussed discussions of the material and of the problems in and the prospects for more effective systems design of the user interface. In recent years a number of computer-based systems involving on-line, interactive interrogation of bibliographic data files have been implemented, and several are in active use, serving a broad and varied clientele. However, discussions of these systems have tended to emphasize details of implementation or descriptions of the particular application involved. Although systems designers certainly have been concerned with making their systems easy to use, prior to this Workshop there has been no attempt to evaluate the accumulating experience about what happens "in front of the terminal" during interactive search. Consequently, this Proceedings constitutes the first statement of our current knowledge about the user/computer interface from the user's perspective. (Author/SJ)

Speech understanding research by Donald E Walker( Book )

7 editions published between 1973 and 1977 in English and Undetermined and held by 6 WorldCat member libraries worldwide

The goal of the research is the development, over a five-year period, of a speech understanding system capable of engaging a human operator in a natural conversation about a specific task domain. During the second year of the project, a new task domain was chosen: the assembly and repair of small appliances, beginning with a leaky faucet. This change was made to provide for more complex interactions of a user with the system, involving a sequence of subtasks. Major modifications were made in all parts of the system, the most important of which was the development of a new parsing strategy. A description of this second version of the SRI speech understanding system is the primary content of this report. (Modified author abstract)
